It is an unpredictable chick-lit read as it covers some fairly serious ground – life-threatening allergies, sudden deaths, infidelity, jealousy, making decisions that are really compromises, and the inevitable secrets – some solemn stuff here. Whilst tackling some intense issues, it is always easy to read and very realistic but still managing to surprise. It is a long read, but a quick one too as it’s hard to put down once you get involved with it.
The story features a wonderful ensemble cast of characters, at the core of which is a group of friends from university in Dublin. The prologue provides the underlying basis of the story with the group just about to graduate and guessing what their futures will all hold post-graduation. So they decide that they will meet up in 5 years’ time to see what paths their lives have taken.
We meet them seven years later when we learn not all has gone to plan. We have an accidental author, an accidental chocolatier, an entrepreneur, a vet and an accountant with guilt, with secrets, and with a decision never to return to Ireland from New York. There are plenty of difficult situation between them, friction between friends with secrets to hide and real awkwardness which mirrors what would happen in real life. It is interesting to see how they handle the circumstances life presents them with.
One criticism is that the Catherine angle to the story was not developed as well as it could have been and ended so abruptly, when we were led to believe she would act in a particular way, she had a sudden realisation and that was that. The potential for intrigue with her was a missed opportunity and therefore I'd give it 4.8 for that. Things work out, as they always do; not perfectly but often for the right reasons. I thoroughly enjoyed this read.
Because for me, this book left me bored thoughtout the middle section, I found some of the characters overbearing and only wanted to moan about their lifes. Also despite having allergy problems myself, I found the story line around Robins allergy's too much and seemed to go on and on, so I didn't feel that it was handed in the best light to the character. I only gave this book two stars, because the ending did have a twist to the story line and because it ended. But for me this was a very slow read as I couldn't be bothered to find out what was happening to the charactor, so whereas I would finish a book in hours or days, this took about too weeks. As my first book experience by Melissa Hill was very good, I will giver her another go, as I am hoping that Never say Never is just an off book for her.
Lastly can all publishers, please either supply the correct cover for Ebooks or charge less for their book. As I feel that some of them can't be bothered to supply the book covers for purchasers of ebooks, but they still expect us to pay the full amount. As a ebook customer, I would like to see the real front and back covers on my books just as much as a normal customer, instead of a grey page as supplied with this ebook.
Not just fluff after all!
