As the two spend more time together, Bea gets to know who Serge is. A hired fighter with whom she feels completely safe. However, when Serge gets in too deep with the local heavies, will she realise that safety was just an illusion.
Why you should read it: I love Charlotte Stein and that was enough of a reason to request the book. She always creates a vivid sense of place with very sympathetic characters. The blurb drew me in. Beatrix is sweet, funny, awkward and lovable. Serge is big, burly and an interesting hero.
What you might hate: I felt that this book lacked the abandon of Ms Stein's usual work. It seemed as though every word was agonised over and as a result took a while to get going and did not make me invest in the story. I loved Serge and Beatrix, but I felt that an essential ingredient was missing.
I also believe that maybe my expectations were unreasonably high.
Rating: 3/5 - it was ok, but I long for a less self-conscious read. Charlotte you rock, but this didn't hit the spot.
OK so there’s some definite good in this book and some bad.
The dialogue is at times perhaps best described as verbal diahorrea. Bea’s soliloquys seem to run away with her and become rambling messes that for me were unnecessary.
That being said for the most part the author manages to capture the perfect balance between awkwardly socially stunted and seriously curious about her baser needs.
At times Bea’s sexual desperation is a bit ridiculous and I did laugh out loud in places that were perhaps not intended to be funny.
I loved Serge, he was truly a BFG and an adorably well read one at that!!
The sex was both brilliantly clumsy and quite intensely sexy, I would have loved big bad Serge to go all alpha but that’s just my personal taste.
This story goes from nothing to declarations of love and devotion incredibly quickly and honestly I would have loved a longer ‘courtship’ so to speak. The story then wraps up far too quickly and rushes through leaving a trail of infuriating questions left unanswered.
I don’t understand why the author finished this story how she did and for me I’m afraid it kind of ruined the whole book for me.
I’m dissatisfied and I hate that at the end of a book.
Never Loved gets 3 stars from me.
