Video game designers Nick and Dan find their half-finished project suddenly replaced with a game that is finished – and brilliant. Soon players everywhere find themselves immersed in an incredible new virtual world. But events in the game become increasingly sinister, taking over the lives of players and blurring the lines with reality.
As Nick's life is thrown into turmoil, he fears for his friend Dan, and his wife Lily, who is drawn to the game as a way to escape her battle with depression. Soon Nick finds himself asking: Where has the game come from? Who made it? What is it for? And most importantly … What does it want from them?
Networked is a thoughtfully written sci-fi novel exploring the strengths and fragilities that make us human.

About the author

LK Chapman writes psychological thrillers and suspense. She published her first psychological novel, Anything for Him, in 2016. A chilling thriller about obsession, jealousy and revenge, Anything for Him has now become a three book series with two sequels (Found You & Never Let Her Go) creating the No Escape trilogy. She has also written two standalone psychological novels, The Stories She Tells, and Into The Lake. LK Chapman’s books are inspired by her studies in psychology, and she has always been fascinated by the strength, peculiarities and extremes of human nature. As well as working as a psychologist, Chapman volunteered for mental health charity Mind before starting her journey as an author. It has been an incredibly exciting journey and she is so grateful for the support of her readers!

I started reading Networked on my way to work on Monday morning, and I'd finished it by Thursday lunchtime. I devoured the whole book in about five long sittings. I couldn't stop myself from speeding through chapters like a mad man.
The book has several flashback sequences, and although I wouldn't usually say I enjoyed the genre of fiction in those sections, in this case I found them enjoyable - they provide great insight into the inner minds of the main characters and help the reader build a surprisingly strong bond with them. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that book can get very dark at times, and there were several points where I even found myself shaking my head and swearing quietly to myself in surprise. The story is seriously gripping and intensely involved.
I thought Networked provided a really great mix of psychological thriller and sci-fi. I would definitely recommend it and I will certainly be looking out for more novels by the same author in future!
Given how broad the sci-fi category is, it can be really hard to find this so I am always really pleased when I find a book like Networked! It is (mostly) set in the present day, with the only sci-fi element really being the titular concept of the Network, an idea which allows us to really get involved with and understand the three main characters of this book.
I don't want to give too much away as the story unfold quite beautifully, all I will say is that what starts off as quite a mundane and grounded scenario (game developers making a game) quickly expands to a place where the author explores concepts such as trust, openness, depression, and ultimately how connected do we want to be with our friends and with the world. It makes for a great, immersive read, so I can't recommend it enough to fans of the more thoughtful brand of sci-fi.
My favourite parts in this book were the dreamlike sequences when characters are exposed to the Network (I genuinely came away feeling spiritually enlightened the first time it happened), while my least favourite parts were probably the flashbacks to one character's struggles with depression (I understand that it's probably very realistic to make her seem irrational and unlikable, but I'd have preferred to like her all the way through). I really hope this book is the first in a series as well, because the world it creates is a phenomenal asset and I would absolutely like to read a prequel about the creation of the Network, as well as find out what happened to the wider community that played the game. For example, I liked to imagine that the streets would be deserted as everyone sits at home playing the game 24/7, but this story focuses almost entirely on the trio who created it.
All in all, I would absolutely read other books by the same author.
