For a reliable connection that doesn't drop out every five minutes (literally) you have to be really quite close to it, and any walls (which unfortunately, Netgear, people do tend to have in their homes) seem to present a big problem. I know walls are big killers for radio signals in general but they must deal with this.
If I'm in line of sight of the router I can get a "100%" signal according to my wireless adapter. In the next door room, not all that far away, it drops to 40% and the connection becomes patchy to unusable.
What's the *point* in wireless that doesn't work unless you're nearly right next to the damn thing...??
The user interface for the router is very well set out. There is column on the right hand side which tells you exactly how every option works, which I thought was brilliant as I had never touched wireless before. It explains how to set up your security and a lot of the advanced featues, which I actually havent bothered with. I am using the 54mbps mode becuase the built in wireless in my laptop does not have the speedbooster technology. Therefore I was expecting the range to cover only half of my house, but to my astonishment I got almost full signal all round the house and getting download speeds as though it was wired.
However, the connection has dropped once or twice in the two weeks that I have had it so far, but this comes part and parcel (apparantly) with buying wireless and it was only for a few seconds so my laptop reconnected straight away. It looks sleek and is very compact. It comes with a stand if you want to have it upright, but I keep it tucked away in a corner of my computer desk.
Being new to wireless I have not had experiance of other products, but I have set up a lot of other computer peripherals and this product is definitly at the top of my list in terms of ease of set up.
As of yet I have not has heat issues witht the product, if you fell it after a few hours of use, it is warm but not hot as people have said woth other Netgear products.
Can't really fault it ... yet.
This combo setup could have been clearer in the NetGear instructions which is why I only gave it 4 stars. Also the two units are too light to stay flat on the table with cables tipping them over backwards.
In terms of performance I have had this router for 2 months now and never experienced a loss of connection, router overheating or any lag when playing games over XBox Live. Signal strength throughout the house remains surprisingly high. I have the router plugged into the computer on ground floor of my house and my XBox 360 (with wireless adapter) is in the room on the 1st floor directly above.
All in all if you own an XBox 360 and are looking to set up a wireless network for online gaming then ignore the negative reviews and buy this router, its definitely worth the money!
Fast, Good looking and Easy to use - what more could you ask for? Well for us Mac users at least!
