Meet Nest Protect

The Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm speaks up to tell you what the problem is and where it is. It can even send an alert to your phone if an alarm goes off or the batteries are getting low.

Make sure you have the right Nest Protect for your home. Just check to see if your current smoke alarm is connected to wires. If it is, you want Nest Protect (Wired 120V). If it isn't, get Nest Protect (Battery).

Know more, worry less.

The simple act of beeping has saved thousands of lives. But a beep only lets you know that there's a problem. Somewhere. In an emergency, you don't have time to guess what's wrong. With Nest Protect, you don't have to. Meet the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.

Always know. From anywhere.

Get a message on your phone or tablet if Nest Protect sounds the alarm for smoke or carbon monoxide. It will also send you a message if the batteries start to run low. And you can check the status of batteries and sensors at any time on the Nest app.

Get a Heads-Up before the emergency.

If there's only a little smoke, Nest Protect can give you an early warning before it has to turn on a loud, howling alarm. We call it Heads-Up - Nest Protect lights up yellow and
tells you where the problem is so you can take care of it in peace.

A clear voice when things go wrong.

In addition to an alarm sound, Nest Protect speaks to you with a human voice. It tells you what the problem is and where it is so you know what to do. And if you have more than one Nest Protect, they can speak up at the same time even if Wi-Fi is down.

Makes you a promise.

When you turn off the lights to go to bed, you'll see your Nest Protect glow green for a second. That means batteries and sensors are working. It also means you won't be waking up at 2am to low-battery chirps. Sweet dreams.

Works with your Nest Thermostat.

If Nest Protect senses dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, it can tell your Nest Thermostat to turn off your boiler-a possible source of poisonous carbon monoxide leaks*. Nest Protect's activity sensors also improve the Auto-Away feature of your Nest Learning Thermostat.

Lights your path at night.

Next time you stumble out of bed in the middle of the night, Nest Protect will automatically light your way.

Sees what's invisible.

You can't see carbon monoxide. Or smell it. Its early symptoms are easily mistaken for the flu, but longer exposure can be deadly. That's why Nest Protect constantly looks for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Easy installation.

Both Nest Protect (Wired 120V) or Nest Protect (Battery) take only minutes to install.

Connecting to Wi-Fi and setting them up with your iPhone, iPad or Android device also takes just a few minutes. Every Nest Protect in your home will connect to the others automatically.

Verified Purchase
I bought three of these two weeks ago and the jury is still out as far as I am concerned.

One was faulty out of the box (as soon as it was powered on it went straight into screaming emergency mode, and couldn't be set up or stopped). I bought from Amazon but Nest support arranged a replacement immediately.

A second unit worked great for a week, then started to develop false alarms (9 in 3 days). Again, I spoke to support who advised that they can easily get dirty, especially if you leave windows open regularly in a dusty environment. The recommended solution is to blow the unit through with a compressed air can (not vacuum it like one other reviewer suggests), and they'll replace it if it doesn't work. I'll update this review once I've done that with the results. Clearly this is something I really just wanted to put in and then forget they were there so I'm disappointed so far - although the company does seem to want to put it right, and they pride themselves on these smoke detectors being less intrusive and easier to use than traditional units.

The voice alert feature is good - clearly tells you which detector is in alarm (by law you can only silence the alarm at the detector that is in alert). BUT, the list of locations you can select for your detector is limited to a pre-recorded set; I imagine this is to match the voice recordings. Trying to replace the existing detectors in my 3 storey house was therefore an issue as it does not allow for installations on stairways (common in the UK).

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Having just moved home one of the first things I did was check the condition of the three mains-powered smoke detectors in the building. As predicted, none of them seemed to work. I had previously been aware of the Nest line of smoke detectors and thermostats, and had heard that the former had been put back on the market after a slight design flaw in the earlier models had been rectified.

Before installing the detector you must first create an online account that requires minimal details, then using your smartphone or tablet you instruct the device on how to connect to the internet and which room of the house it will be living in.

Once set up and installed by a qualified electrician, it was up and running. It looks quite swanky for a smoke detector. It's difficult to describe such a device as 'stylish' but for now, this is about as close as such a device is going to get. The ring light pulses in different colours depending on what message is being relayed, for example it will be red when sounding an alert, yellow when suggesting information such as low battery, green when letting you know everything is OK, and blue when you are operating it in some way. There is also a natty 'pathfinder' feature which lights up the ring in white when it detects movement in the dark so as to help light your way subtly.

I will be purchasing two more of these devices plus a battery powered fourth. They all talk to each other and should combine to provide added reassurance. They will notify my from afar if anything is detected in the way of smoke or carbon monoxide. If I happened to have a Nest thermostat they would also provide additional temperature readings from around the house as well as an increase of whether anyone is in residence requiring the heating on.

I own 3 Nest Protects (Kitchen, Hallway and Upstairs) for the past 11 months and will be returning these units for the following reason;

False Alarms

These have happened on all units in the past 6 months, we would receive a warning e.g. "There is smoke Upstairs, the alarm will sound, the alarm is loud...." and then either no new message or an escalation of the message. In all cases, the unit would have to be separated from the ceiling mount, disconnected from the mains, back cover unscrewed and batteries removed, only then would the false alarm and messages stop.

To compound the problem, these false alarms have happened while on holidays, (a neighbour needed to be called) or in the middle of the night. As it happens, I began writing this after the latest false alarm, which occurred at four in the morning to the dismay of my family.

We have now had approximately six false alarms and they have had the effect of the family now ignoring the alarm when it occurs. We no longer have any confidence in the product.

This morning I removed all 3 nest protects and replaced them with traditional interconnected fire-alarms.

I really wanted these devices to work, I read and followed the support articles from nest i.e. Using compressed air to remove any dust particles, making sure it was correctly placed etc. but to no avail.

The concept of a connected, smart smoke detector + co2 was the reason I bought the units, I could live without the "wave" functionality but unfortunately I cannot in good conscious have a smoke alarm in the home that is now ignored.

Kind regards,
