Nessy GamesPlayer is a motivational CD to help children aged 7-14 improve spelling and reading. GamesPlayer is a complete computer game that follows a storyline where skills improve as you grow your own pet Nessy from a hatchling into humongous megabeast. The story takes you on a journey to the distant mountains of Ness to hatch a mystery egg. As you explore you are led through a series of animated games and win bananas to feed Nessy. The games follow a structured reading and spelling programme devised by specialist teachers. Homework mode includes a recording facility that allows children to record their own words to play with the computer games or you can access 1200 pre-recorded words plus many graded sentences. The pre-recorded lists include key words from the National Literacy Strategy. The range of difficulty options makes GamesPlayer suitable for all children.

"Builds confidence" my foot!

I bought this on the recommendation of my child's school's learning support department. I thought I'd give the Nessy route a go because the graphics are slicker and less dated than the alternative Wordshark program. Here are my main observations:

- the program is buggy. As I type, it's at the bottom of the screen saying '(Not Responding)' as it doesn't like being switched off or minimised. I've used Ctrl-Alt-Delete and it still won't close down and even loads up and corrupts something called 'Macromedia Projector' into the bargain. When it's working, it refuses to minimise and insists on being the top tile in any cascade of open programs. The only way to check an email or the internet is to move the screen out of the way temporarily.

- the variety of games is good, but the reward system is unhelpful to say the least. My daughter quickly latched onto the rewards of earning bananas to help the Nessy dinosaur grow. These bananas are only given out when you complete 3 separate tasks successfully. But one of the tasks is time limited - you have to correctly identify 8 words in 30 seconds. After a huge number of attempts, my child managed this once and it was so traumatic and made her feel such a complete failure that she never wanted to play that game again. On the way, she achieved a lot - I could see her progress from 3 to 4 to 6 and eventually 8 words, which was great - she is now better at recognising consonant-vowel-consonant words with `a' in the middle. But she won't go anywhere near the other vowels - and there is no reward for her doing so anyway as the banana has already been won. She has been made to feel a failure 29 times out of the 30 or so attempts she's made. Would it have been so difficult to reward progress? To allow the parent to set the time limit? To reduce the number of words? I don't think so.

Sadly, this timed game turns out to be a cornerstone of the whole experience, containing exactly the spellings and word construction issues that my daughter is trying to overcome. There is no incentive to stay at the level she needs help with because she has already earned all the bananas she can, so wants to push on and see Nessie grow. Plus her overall experience of that experience was one of failure and frustration. Sadly, I think I'm going to have to buy Wordshark as well in order to properly focus on her needs and stop demotivating her when she's actually trying hard and improving.

I agree with the comment on how different activities are: some are harder and can be a bit challenging, but, all in all, it's a very good product that motivates the children. I've been using it with a student aged 13 and, apart from enjoying the game, he's more confident, has learned many words and he has also improved his keyboard skills.
I was a bit reluctant, because it's a bit expensive but it's been totally worth it.

started looking around for a software to help my little girl with words for dyslexia and found this software really good plus my daughter loves it as it is playing and learning at the same time, good graphics and clever games on it and a fraction of the price i was seeing word shark at, i think dyslexia software should be at a reasonable price just like this one so yeah grab one!

Our 7 year old grandson loves the program and treats it as a game. He is delighted to demonstrate it. It is bright and attractive and the exercises are quite obviously helpful in speeding the recognition of words, etc.

The only reason for not giving it five stars is that his parents say that it does very occasionally crash, and some of the games - swatting flies, bopping running mice, for example - require such quick reactions that you almost wonder whether the program was designed for a slower computer than you tend to find today.

Those are small quibbles and there is absolutely no doubt that it was money well spent and we are very pleased we got it for them.

They are so determined to get the bananas to feed Nessy that they stay with each teaching point for far longer than they would if we were using other strategies. They are focused, learning and having fun at the same time which is great!

Although there is more variety and levels in this product than in nessy fingers, some of the games seem more complex than others and goals harder to achieve. Can be a bit off putting for some kids. Also some issues loading and with the game crashing
