- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 October 2008Despite the other reviewers rating (2 stars?), this is the definitive edition we've been waiting for in the UK. This set comes with a fairly sturdy tin box, a 60-page booklet with Eva/Angel info and a glossary of terms you'll hear in Eva. It also, obviously, comes with the 7-disc 26-episode run of NGE, remastered especially for this set. While the picture quality dips at times and occasionally shows its age, its much better than the VHS/DVD releases of the past. This set comes with director's cuts of various episodes, commentaries and 4 documentaries. It's the best boxset were likely to see in the UK and at £72, I was very happy with what I got. If you havent seen Eva before, then I'd be wary about your preconceptions or word-of0mouth reviews. Different people take different things from it, as it can be viewed as a metaphor for religion. On the flipside, if you just enjoy giant robots putting each other through skyscrapers then you'll no doubt enjoy it too. There's a strange directorial style throughout with the focus quite often on mundane objects for lingering periods and there are times when dialogue is repeated a few too many times. But for this amount of money, the only boxset out there to beat it in value is the Wolfs Rain Definitive Edition. Highly recommended by a serious anime/manga fan
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2006When I heard the premium Collection was coming out I pre ordered instantly, based on what great things I had heard about it from others. Although I hadnt watched any previous versions of Eva the sound and picture quality is great, even though I have no base of comparison in terms of previos NGE releases. What I can comment on fully is how great the entire series is in terms of its plot, characters and pace. Few other series have you fascinated by the characters as much as Eva (Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist also have great character development). The series has something for everybody including humour, tragedy and amazing giant mechs. The English voice actors are also very good and seem to convey the same emotions as the Japanese guys. The layout of the DVD's are also really top quality- clear, subtle and stylish layout. Unlike other anime box set releases Eva comes with a 60 page booklet with info on each Angel and features 26 episode commentaries. I dont want to go into too much depth about the characters but there is a good variety of characters favourites being Shinji, Misato and Asuka, their relationship unfolds nicely and is fun to watch as the series progresses. The Special features are top notch with several episode commentaries and two mini documentaries which are interesting, best feature must be the English voice actor for Asuka's huge room of Asuka merchendise, very funny!
All in all I would recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion to any Anime fan as it soars above the majority of anime released the ten years following its original release.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 October 2008I've heard about this programme for a long time but been a little bamboozled by the different versions available for purchase and so I was delighted to find this new release of an "Ultimate Collection". I forked out the £70.98 and expected something living up to the title and the price tag... I was so wrong!
This DVD collection is presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio, which I hate anyway, but I thought, "Ah, it's an old programme so it was probably made that way, I'll live with it." Sadly it quickly became apparent that the programme was not made that way at all: in many scenes you can only see the forearm of the character speaking as the rest of their body has disappeared in the cut-off section on the left or right of the screen; one scene even has two characters talking to each other who should be standing one at each edge of the screen, but they are both absent from the image presented to us, an image of some boring boxes and crates; by the ad break of episode 8 I realised that I was no longer watching Neon Genesis Evangelion but was instead watching 'eon enesis vangelion' as the initials of the words of the title had fallen over the side... you can't tell me they made it that way on purpose!
The upshot of all that is bad framing, missing action and a really distracting feeling that you are watching the programme through a keyhole. Having read for so long about how beautifully drawn this anime is I simply feel cheated by this poor quality, cheaply made rubbish which is a 'UK exclusive edition' presumably because whomever is responsible felt ashamed to offer it for sale in their own country.
Everything about this product is cheap: there are the problems mentioned above; the tin box is flimsy and arrived all bent out of shape; one of the plastic cases snapped when I opened it in exactly the same way I've opened every other slimpack case I've ever encountered; the booklet was never proof-read and neither were the subtitles!
I gave this two stars only because the story is quite good, although it is clearly aimed at a teen audience and not the deep, philosophical masterpiece I'd been led to expect when I read other reviews of the series.
At the price it's a total rip off. Save yourself some money and rent it before deciding whether to buy. This was the worst purchase I ever made on Amazon... and I bought Onegai Teacher!!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 February 2011dont want to ruin it for ya .brilliant anime until the very ending what a let down. to all the people out there giving this anime 5 stars i do not get you and why ohh why. either the ending is too complicated or the budget runs out it does not excuesses the lame ending that is provided to all ye out there who disagree i dont care. its good just watch to ep 22 and stop and make up your own ending. otherwise spend your money on something that has an ending

Bought this around 2010 and I still have it. Eva is one of the best anime series around.
JosephReviewed in the United States on 27 August 20104.0 out of 5 stars Almost "Perfect"
First off, I love this collection. The episodes have never looked better thanks to the remastering process and the commentaries included are real gems. The show itself looks fantastic, however, my only grip is the packaging. The packaging is a little hard to deal with. If I want to watch disk 7, I need to go through all of the other disks first to get to it. However, this is mostly a minor gripe.
The price: Yes, the price is quite a bit high, however, I was lucky and someone was selling it for 40 dollars. If you can find a steal like that, I recommend this set very highly.
J. HardawayReviewed in the United States on 10 October 20125.0 out of 5 stars review on neon genesis evangelion platinum collection
i was very satisfied, due to how well it was packaged and also being that i asked for more pacific details on the condition of the item and i couldnt agree more with the description that the seller provided me with.
also on the actual review of the item,in terms of watching it and telling what i thought of it.ive already seen the original 1995-96 version and loved it and personally didnt think it was all that confusing, but when i did deeper research on the series and what it all meant i found that it truly was very confusing, and this is due to the fact that hideaki anno(the director),was on a horrible budget for this series and if i was told correctly the original script for the series was actually between 60-120 episodes and when you try to fit all of that into 26 episodes your going to be faced with nothing but difficulty, and frankly i think he did a pretty d@m% good job at it with all the difficulties he faced in the making.but, despite all the unexplained things that are in this series it is a fantastic show and would highly reccomend it to anyone.
and just for the record,i think that since neon genesis evangelion has blown up as much as it has and hes remaking the original series right now,i think he should go back and produce the original script to give us the most detailed showing of this series yet.i would buy it.
CallistianStarReviewed in the United States on 1 February 20115.0 out of 5 stars Cute Tin, But Overall Just Another Release
If you are in it just for the episodes, it is still a good buy. My first version of this series was on VHS as I taped it from the television, so it is still worth it to that aspect. It is a smaller fit into your overall DVD collection as the box doesn't really take up that much room compared to the shows first time on DVD.
For those that haven't seen any one part of the series yet, it can be confusing and a little frustrating as all the loose ends don't seem to be tied up. Much of it is up for interpretation and guessing.
Overall a really excellent series though if you can put up with it. Many describe Shinji (THE MAIN CHARACTER) to be rather annoying, but I liked him along with most of the cast. The DUB version is just as good as the SUB in my opinion. The DUB version even tries to incorporate much more German for the German-exchange student, Asuka (my favorite character) which is kind of cool.
Definitely would rec.
Rodrigo Chan Seng ChonReviewed in the United States on 5 July 20082.0 out of 5 stars Buy the other box set!!!
I agree with A. Andrew "PartyInMyMouth", I bought it because I thought the extras would worth it, and I never had a box set from NGEvangelion before, if you are for the episodes themselves, buy the cheaper box set wich comes with the director's cut, and you will save your money from buying something that does not have anything great that won't come in the cheaper box set.
Ps: this 2 stars is for the series, the package deserve ZERO.
