The portrait release 2.5mm jack broke off the circuit board inside within 4 months of purchase. After being stripped down and reassembled then soldered back in place it still broke off the next time I used it, hinting that this is just poor design.
The left-hand battery retaining latch broke so the battery in that bay wants to pop out and open the door consistently.
A knock on the left corner of the grip meant that the tripod screw has broke and due to this the tripod thread popped out of its housing and now protrudes by 5mm. This makes it useless when placed on a tripod and super wobbly so I have to take it off for long exposure work.
Overall it's a good unit, but if you don't treat your gear like its made of glass I would try something else.
Number 1 the battery compartment allows 2 batteries, this is true and although it at first didnt recognize the grip i got there after a couple of minutes but this grip is large, it is with 2 batteries quite an additional weight and this is my first issue, why carry such added weight simply to have the benefit of double battery life, batteries are light by themselves and for years we have put a spare in our pocket without any problem and we can change a battery in 1 or 2 seconds so to carry this added lump all day on a shoot is pointless.
It would be useful for long exposure photography on a tripod however, so think about your requirements first !!.
Issue number 2 is the use of the grip to shoot portrait shots, good in theory but firstly you must have the cable attached which is a pain and looks silly and the main issue is when you turn the camera sideways the view finder which was in a nice central place is now bottom left of this huge lump of a camera which feels very of balance and unstable.
So in a nut shell this is a a useless money maker and has been returned, and one last point YOU OWN A D5300 ,THIS IS NOT MAKING YOUR CAMERA A D4S or D5 so dont kid yourself this is making it a top of the range camera because it is now big and scary looking , those who know cameras will see this as a cheap plastic lump on a basic DSLR ,which indeed it is, dont waste your money !!!
It does work however as described that is why I gave it a 3 star rating.
If you have a D5200 my advice is buy the specific model for your camera.
Delivery was speedy from Amazon as usual. It was well packed and not in too large a box which I have had before.
Firstly, it fits flush to my nikon d5300 and doesnt look out of place with "gaps"
It locks to the camera also so it doesnt move around.
The grip works with batteries without the need for the cable (the grip has its own shutter release for portrait, which you will need the cable for.. which also works effectively)
Next, the grip is very light even with now having 2 batteries installed. This gives the camera a much better feel without making it too heavy.
Lastly, it has the part at the bottom for a tripod.
Would highly recommend.
