This book has well written and interesting descriptions of trees in Britain that have been here since the last ice age with wonderful drawings. A lovely present for any tree lover!

I've found this series of books to be highly entertaining and informative, so far I've bought five but intend to buy more, they are by no means comprehensive in their content but a perfect grounding for further study in a very wide range of subjects, The Naitive British Trees book is well written and illustrated in a way which hold the readers interest without burying its self in too much irrelavent detail, Wooden books also have an excellent eco policy by using only recycled materials so you could buy one or two without affecting your 'green' conscience!! These little books would make a great gift for those people who are normally difficult to buy for

Nice pretty little book but I expected to see actual photos of the trees so that I could recognise them, but they are sketches of leaves.

I like the "wooden books" rustic quaint presentation, but was sadly a little disappointed with this one. I had hoped for a little more detail to aid with identifying trees or cut wood. Particularly there seemed little information on bark. The genral shape of trees and the form of their leaves seemed well documented, but for me, all the trees looked a bit tree shape. I am being a bit overly harsh really because I had a wish to identify some cut logs and trees for burning, and have been unable to. If I was just looking at a growing tree, and not cutting branches off it, then this is probably as much information as you might expect. I like to know a little more about the structure and density of wood and the nature of its bark and grain, all of which can assist with identification.
To be fair if I wanted a book on identifying trees then maybe I should have looked for just that.

A nice little companion for a walk among the trees

Thoughtfully designed and produced in all recycled materials, as all the Wooden Books are. Basic information about native British trees, and, as it is written by a woodsman, giving the major uses and burning characteristics of each species. The illustrations lift it above the ordinary - crisply reproduced, full page, black and white engravings from 16th and 18th century works, which are just superb, plus modern silhouettes and leaf, blossom, seed and fruit for each tree. Pocket size makes it easy to take on a forest walk.

I have a couple of books in this series and I've enjoyed the others, and I have given one as a gift (well received), but I was a bit disappointed when I received this one. I'd never have bought it if I was in a bookshop and leafed through it (no pun intended). There just isn't enough here.

I'm not saying this is a bad book, just that there is much less to it than I expected, and I don't feel it was worth buying, nor worth making space for on a shelf (and it's not much space either - just a small paperback!). It's one thing to be small and concise, which is often just fine, but quite another to be so thin on content.

At least it looks attractive, I will give it that. But I had to go out for a more useful book, because this didn't cut it. Sorry!
