Included in the box is:-
A white sheet with 9 tickets to cut out on (you could always photocopy for more)
A small Plot Twists Book - It is split in to acts 1,2 and 3. The children are to choose one plot twist from each act
A 31 page colourful Handbook - Tells the child how to use the items in the box, how to put on a play, and tips for making moments, creating costumes, acting skills etc
A Programme for the kids to write what their play is about, who is in it, and draw the image on the front (Again this could be photocopied for more)
8 Settings cards, including Secret Laboratory, Tropical jungle, Mysterious Manor, The Big City, Big Ship Valiant, Palace of Wonders, Planet X and Forest of Enchantment.
28 Character Cards (plus two blank create your own cards) - Used to get ideas about people in your play
I love this box, it is well worth the price and would make a fantastic present for a child. I would say this was for a child around 6+, due to the amount of reading involved, but with an adults help a younger child would be able to put on their own play.
Could be used for creative writing.
*I received a free copy of this book, which I voluntarily reviewed
At £13 it isn't cheap, but it really is a great gift and gives you everything you'd need to 'put on a play'.
The Handbook looks at the order in which to do things before a play will be ready - story, characters, costumes, and even your stage itself and how to rehearse. The text is quite small but clear enough, I think, and the language suitable for Key Stage 2 students. It also gives hints on how to use the rest of the pack.
Character cards - 30, heroes and villains, etc, with an illustration and details about them to get you started in their creation, as well as how to go about using costumes and make-up to stage them.
Plot twist book - tips on what to put in Acts 1, 2 and 3 of your play, such as 'someone has gone missing (Act 1) with things to think about related to this, then you choose a tip from Acts 2 and 3, with questions to ask yourself to bring it to life and stage it. I really liked the range of ideas given here, and the questions asked of children will help them logically plan their plot.
Setting cards - again, lots of imaginative ideas and a fully rounded look at 8 possible settings (Secret lab, Forest of Enchantment, Planet X), with little stories-in-themselves taking you on possible tours of these places, asking questions to make our playwrights picture their setting and how to bring it to life.
There are also a sheet of blank tickets (with show/time/date on them) to photocopy/cut out as well as a programme, where you can fill in the cast and synopsis details - it really adds to the authenticity of a play and the experience of putting one on.
If I were still 10 I would have been excited beyond belief at this, it's perfect for those of a theatrical bent.
I would say that ages 9-12 will be the target market, who can both read this and use its ideas most effectively.
With thanks to Walker Books for the sample copy.
This is the best little kit I've seen in a long time. It has everything a young imaginary play lover would need to put on their own show - great Christmas gift! Of course adults can also get involved if children need help with reading and understanding how the magic world of the theatre works.
I received this from Walker in exchange for my impartial review.
The back of the character cards are blank so you can write notes on that particular character. The backs of the large place settings cards gives you a rough guideline of the scene, and has stagecraft tips. Mysterious Manor is particularly good. It would have been nice to have had some more tickets, only nine are provided, but they could be photocopied. All in all, this has gone down well, but it's a bit pricey at £12.99 for what you get.
Thankyou to walker books for sending me this in exchange for an honest review
