Having bought a couple of books in the NG Field Guide series I thought that this one would be as good but was sadly disappointed. You will learn very little about photography within as it covers the more "technical" aspects of digital, pixels, sensors and post processing. Unfortunately it is too generic to be of much use in post processing. If you want to learn post processing buy a book on your editing software. If you want to find out about digital cameras you may as well search the internet. If you want a good NG guide on photography the buy the old "National Geographic Field Guide to Photography" which, although dealing with film, provides a better guide to improving your photography.

3.0 out of 5 stars Field Trip For Digital Photography 3 Feb. 2011

After reading the original Photography Field Guide I anticipated this one to be at least as good and better since it is aimed at DSLR. It is a very superficial, cursory booklet that is of very little help to me or anyone else unless they are just looking for a snapshot of information. Considering the cheap price, it may not be a waste of money but it will certainly send you looking for more depth elsewhere.

Fun fact- the grey inside of the cover works great for checking your white balance!
2.0 out of 5 stars Not what you think 7 Jan. 2014

It's not the least bit instructional. Just a collection of digital photos and not even any F stop, shutter speeds or ISO settings to compare.
4.0 out of 5 stars Basic Overall thats all 14 May 2008

I have used the Nat'l Geo series before and have found them to be good which led me to buy this. Just like the ones before it is written for the basic user. While I am not a complete novice, the book does draw out some higher skilled techniques for growth. Readabilty is important to me and this book scores high in that regard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not meant to be stand-alone 7 Jan. 2009

For the people who complain that it's too unfocused or not advanced enough, you should realize that it is meant to accompany the Nat'l Geographic Photography Field Guide (ISBM 079225676x). THAT is the in-depth photography manual. This one is just supposed to be its digital complement--not a substitute.
