You may think that the synopsis to this movie (and indeed the book by Tim McLoughlin that this film was adapted from) has a familiar ring to it: `A young man struggling to find cash whom agrees to take a job with local mobster and slowly gets drawn into the dark underbelly of crime, his life spiralling out of control'. However whilst this is all true, we also get some sharp dialogue and wonderful cinematic shots whereby director Francois Velle mixes up black & white and colour delightfully, integrating the snapshots of the main characters photography superbly, whilst capturing the gritty and the shocking in a thought-provoking way.

The acting is good and Kevin Zegers will find it hard to be better in a future role, as he falls perfectly into the gutsy, if slightly naïve Mike well. His father is the great Vincent D'Onofrio (whom will always be the hapless chubby marine from Full Metal Jacket to me) who once again shows his great acting range. Sophia Bush is the love interest (previously seen in The Hitcher) whom does fine with the limited role, but it's Eddie Cahill who plays the character of Nicky Shades that stands out in the role of a fallen hero.

This is and interesting and intriguing movie that isn't quite a gangster movie, but a movie that has elements of coming-of-age and struggle of identity, mixed with drama and romance. I had seen the trailer of this movie a little while ago, and whilst I found it interesting, the movie is a lot better. This is definitely worth checking out!

Unfortunately the American BLU RAY issue of "The Narrows" on Image Entertainment is REGION A LOCKED - so it won't play on our machines unless they're chipped to be 'all regions' (which few are).

Another good movie denied us by the crappy restrictions of Region Coding...

Kevin Zegers was quite the revelation in this film if, like me, you mainly know him from a guest spot in the sitcom Friends! Here he convincingly plays a 'Nu-yawk' italian american who is torn between two lives in a well crafted coming-of-age thriller. I found this movie pleasingly reminiscent of De Niro's A Bronx Tale. It was brilliant to see the vastly under rated Vincent D'Onofrio is a meaty role that seemed tailor written for him. There's great scorcese style dialogue and brutal set pieces wrapped into some great gritty storytelling.

Some good actors on offer, who could have done soooo much more if the story line was worked better. Falls short on many levels.
Was done better by Robert de Niro in a Bronx tale, which has a similar story line. Dad wants to keep his son away from the mob life.

some scenes really resonated with me - the student discussion re the project, trying to fit in. Also liked father/son relationship and the relationship with mobsters, when just trying to get by...
