A Must for Every Railway Lover.

The word "iconic" can be over-used, but it is certainly applicable to this book, written as it was in the mid 1950s, when all but a handful of the railways it discusses were closed. Leaving the Irish lines aside (they were all dead at the time, and the preservation movement there has been more patchy than in England and Wales; however, they were obviously cherished by PBW and his fellow narrow gauge scribes such as James Boyd), there were five railways struggling on in Wales at the time: the Snowdon Mountain (which is maybe a special case anyway) and the Vale of Rheidol still carrying passengers, the Welshpool & Llanfair still with a freight-only service (but destined to close before the book was published) and two more in the early stages of preservation and restoration, the Talyllyn and the Ffestiniog in that order. All five of these are flourishing again now, and today's changed leisure climate has ensured that they have been joined by numerous others among the 27 covered in a short chapter each with a historical overview introduction and an epilogue. I do not think it is too strong to say that without this beautifully and evocatively written summary of the charm and individuality of our small railways, this renaissance might well not have happened to the extent it has. Narrow Gauge Album has been an inspiration to generations of the staff and volunteers who keep these railways alive.

Two of the saddest short chapters deal with the demise and last trains (in 1935 and 1937 respectively) on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in Devon and the Welsh Highland Railway in Snowdonia. Those closures were over 80 years ago now, yet a new and impressive WHR runs on its old trackbed again and the L&B is gradually reclaiming its right of way. It is thanks to writers of the stamp of Tom Rolt, John Snell, James Boyd and Patrick Whitehouse in books like this one that this sort of transformation has occurred, and the book should be on every railway lover's shelf for its historical value and for shedding light and warmth to bring that renaissance about.
