Another great story from Stephen Leather featuring our hero Dan 'Spider' Shepherd, this time set in the Brecon Beacons of Wales in December 1996, during the period of Spider's Selection into the SAS. The story takes place during the Escape and Evasion (E&E) portion of his training and selection, which I found hugely interesting.

It’s fascinating to learn about the SAS selection process which is highly demanding, if these books reflect the reality, and I'm guessing they weren't written without some reasonable research.

This is part of a number of short stories that act as prequels to the novels, which start after Shepherd has left the SAS and joined the police, so it's great to get more of his back story.

I love all Leather's Shepherd tales and they definitely keep me gripped. As I've read more of this author's work I've become more of a fan of his style, with his acute observations and straightforward, economical use of language.

How can one man keep keep churning out such great work? The idea behind these books is to give us an insight into the world of Dan Shepherd during his time in the SAS, before he took up the cause of the law. They do a great job of background filling and enjoy reading them. Please keep this up.

A good read, and well integrated with other stories from this writer and the Spider Shepherd short stories and novels. If you want to be there when you read a story this is the writer for you. Somehow he manages to get you to feel the damp earth, hear the echoes and experience the tale as it unfolds. Well worth 77 pence on my kindle account.

Excellent as always, very enjoyable short story. Steven Leather never disappoints, and I particularly like Spider Shepherd's adventures.
It is nice to be able to purchase low cost stories for my kindle.

Typical quality story from the author, you needs to turn over the page before you've read it, see to see whats happening.
