Nancy Drew is heading home when she witnesses a little girl almost get hit by a truck. This chance meeting with Judy and her aunts leads Nancy into her first mystery. The aunts were counting on inheriting money from their cousin Josiah Crowley. But other relatives have produced a will that leaves everything to them. When Nancy begins to realize the plight of everyone left out of the will, she feels she must investigate. But where might the real will be hidden?
I read many of Nancy's mysteries while growing up, but I realized I'd never read this one before. The story seemed a little more straight forward then I remember others being, but it might just be me. Still, Nancy tackles the case with her usual enthusiasm. I was most surprised to discover the Bess and George weren't present for this first adventure. Frankly, I missed them.
I simply must share the line that drew lots of laughs from me. A villain is confronting Nancy and says, "This will be the last time you'll ever stick your nose in business that doesn't concern you!" If you only knew, fella....
Nancy may not represent the best literature available, but she's fun escapism that everyone needs. Over 70 years old, she's proved her staying power. This is the perfect series to make life long mystery lovers out of kids. Sure worked for me.

I have been reading and collecting Nancy Drew stories for almost 30 years. I fell in love with the River Heights sleuth and her friends when I was 8 as my mother had when she was a child. I have seen the stories grow and develop over the course of time and they are as wonderful and full of suspense and intrigue as ever (some are even better). I also like to compare the differences between the original blue cover editions, the yellow hardback versions and the new paperback style. Nancy, Bess, George, Ned, Hannah and Carson are old, familiar friends. Every time I open a book (and I still read them) I feel like I have come home. I just hope every girl or boy gets a chance to read atleast one Nancy Drew book and can enjoy them as much as I have. Thank you Carolyn Keene for the many years of enjoyment!

I am a Nancy Drew freak ever since I received one of her books for my birthday many years ago. I've loved her books from the very first (this one) all the way to the continuations that are still being published. I just wanted to say Nancy, George, and Bess are extraordinary people and deserve to be commended along with their creater, Carolyn Keene. All her books are eye openers and deserve to be read by people like you!

I have just read this again, after reading the customer reviews. I was very surprised at the one that accused the author of being rascist. I didn't remember the villain having references to being Jewish or his henchwoman.
Now I am certain that there is definitely no henchwoman and the villain, Nathan Gomber, is not Jewish.
So please do not let that stop you reading this book. It is the second Nancy Drew, and already she is a very capable detective. She offers to help her friend Helen's relatives at Twin Elms, an old Colonial mansion. There seems to be a ghost, frightening Aunt Rosemary and Miss Flora. Nancy suspects that it may have something to do with the case her father, a lawyer, is working on.
There are many times when you yourself feel scared (even if Nancy isn't!). I especially remember the laugh - which helped Nancy deduct more but would have frightened me out of my wits!
Anyone who loves a good mystery, and Nancy Drew fans looking for another instalment- I would definitely recommend The Hidden Staircase, despite the fact that the title gives half the mystery away!

This is the first of the original Nancy Drew mysteries. Nancy, the daughter of famous lawyer Carson Drew, is upset at the news that the awful Topham family will be inheriting a fortune from Josiah Crowley a man they took in just to get hold of his money! When she realises that there might be another will hidden somewhere, Nancy decides to investigate and make sure that justice is done. In the process she puts herself in great danger, becomes involved in a pursuit in her blue roadster and encounters dangerous burglars!

It's been years since I read a Nancy Drew book and so I was slightly worried that `The Secret of the Old Clock' wouldn't be as good as I remembered it. Certainly it does feel dated and not quite as PC as the books written nowadays. Having said that though, I still think that Nancy is as good a role model as ever: patience, hard-work, kindness, consideration, self-sufficiency, honesty and resourcefulness are all rewarded and what could be better than that!

(Apologies for all the exclamation marks, I tend to get excited when I'm reading Nancy Drew!)

Some people would probably say I'm a little too old to be reading Nancy Drew, I'm twenty seven, but each one is a nostalgia trip. These books were some of the earliest I read and remind me to this day why I enjoy losing myself in a good book. This isn't even one of the best but it is still a delightful read. I wonder how many of the books released today will survive for eighty years. I doubt there are that many so long live Nancy Drew.
