I read many of Nancy's mysteries while growing up, but I realized I'd never read this one before. The story seemed a little more straight forward then I remember others being, but it might just be me. Still, Nancy tackles the case with her usual enthusiasm. I was most surprised to discover the Bess and George weren't present for this first adventure. Frankly, I missed them.
I simply must share the line that drew lots of laughs from me. A villain is confronting Nancy and says, "This will be the last time you'll ever stick your nose in business that doesn't concern you!" If you only knew, fella....
Nancy may not represent the best literature available, but she's fun escapism that everyone needs. Over 70 years old, she's proved her staying power. This is the perfect series to make life long mystery lovers out of kids. Sure worked for me.
Now I am certain that there is definitely no henchwoman and the villain, Nathan Gomber, is not Jewish.
So please do not let that stop you reading this book. It is the second Nancy Drew, and already she is a very capable detective. She offers to help her friend Helen's relatives at Twin Elms, an old Colonial mansion. There seems to be a ghost, frightening Aunt Rosemary and Miss Flora. Nancy suspects that it may have something to do with the case her father, a lawyer, is working on.
There are many times when you yourself feel scared (even if Nancy isn't!). I especially remember the laugh - which helped Nancy deduct more but would have frightened me out of my wits!
Anyone who loves a good mystery, and Nancy Drew fans looking for another instalment- I would definitely recommend The Hidden Staircase, despite the fact that the title gives half the mystery away!
It's been years since I read a Nancy Drew book and so I was slightly worried that `The Secret of the Old Clock' wouldn't be as good as I remembered it. Certainly it does feel dated and not quite as PC as the books written nowadays. Having said that though, I still think that Nancy is as good a role model as ever: patience, hard-work, kindness, consideration, self-sufficiency, honesty and resourcefulness are all rewarded and what could be better than that!
(Apologies for all the exclamation marks, I tend to get excited when I'm reading Nancy Drew!)
