This is the 4th tales of game I have completed (5th if you count dawn of a new world) and it improved big time on xillia 1 in one area, tried a few different ideas in the gameplay that were good, but were not executed as well as could of been and as for rest it was the case of it isn't broke don't fix it.
Anyway I will start with the best part of the game the storyline which was excellent(shame on Namco Bandai for not putting this much effort in the 1st game), it kept me guessing throughout what was going to happen next and the bittersweet ending surprised me in good way, most games I play it is easy to see how it is going to end not with this game though to me it was better than the tales of symphonia story and that is not easy to do.
As for the new cast members I think whoever came up with ludger is a fan of the persona series he is a mostly mute cast member who converses with the other cast via your own dialogue choices and I was fine with that, although I thought some of his facial expressions were a bit awkward, the little girl elle was also good addition as well as adding to the unpredictability of the story. It was good to see what the original cast were up to since the last game, I do think it was more than coincidence that the most changed cast member was leia since I thought she was the weak link in the 1st game.
The game retain the great soundtrack from the 1st game and added a few nice new additions in the sequel so no complaints there, they changed up the system for learning new skills (lillium orbs) which I actually like better than the one in 1st game the trouble is you can max out all the skills fairly early in the game with not much grinding needed and took a bit of the incentive away for battling in my opinion, the bigger emphasis on completing requests I liked but there was not enough available in the game in order to complete aspects. I enjoyed the option of different types of weapons being available to ludger which encouraged me to look for enemy weaknesses (especially against one annoying elite monster) more than xillia 1 and I liked ludger's transform ability although it made battling a bit on the easy side.
This has become my new favourite Tales of game to date it kept the good bits from the 1st game and in my view improved greatly on the one noticeable negative from xillia 1 the main plot story and as a result just edges out the awesome tales of symphonia which considering it is nearly 10 years younger than symphonia it should do, I noticed on another review a comment that the story was probably dumbed down as they (Namco Bandai) knew a sequel was coming out and I agree, they should have been straight with fans about this from the start that they were planning 2 xillia games and put more effort into the 1st game's storyline the tales of games obviously have a very loyal fanbase and they deserved better than what they got after paying full price.
