Driven to the French Foreign Legion by a need to escape and a sense of adventure, Tony Sloane was selected for one of the Legion's crack regiments. He spent five years in this most mysterious of all armies, becoming one of the few foreigners to be promoted to corporal, and to become an instructor. From his basic training in the south of France and Corsica to war-zone operations in South Africa, Sloane describes the day-to-day reality of Legion life - including the tedium in which alcohol-fuelled grudges can fester, his time in solitary confinement, and the sheer adrenaline of the battlefield. This is a true account of events that were sometimes glorious and sometimes appalling.

Straight and personal account of what life in the Legion does to you (in the late 1980s) but sad that the last year or so led to a hatred of everything outside it and heavy drinking. Tony did well getting the rank of corporal and was offered further promotion at the point of leaving - they obviously thought he was good and worth trying to hang onto. Corporal may not sound much compared to the British Army but damned hard to get in the Legion.
Interesting different approach to being a corporal from Simon's book when he led the recruits on the assault courses unlike some officers who just ordered their men to do.
Definitely liked the book which has prompted me to read a couple more on the same subject
I would recommend this book to anyone. Through my judgement and other ex-professional soldiers who work along with me truly agree that this is an exceptional and powerful book to read.
This is the story of a young man who joins the Legion and over the course of 5 years turns from a regular teen into an aggresive, violent, heavy drinking thug with no compassion. The book is a great read tho.
