This is a slow book and I think that the pacing was wrong with far too much time spent on setting the scene at the beginning, although I accept that this was to establish Katelyn's character. I did find the book dragging a bit until the canoe trip. All the way through the novel the author uses a lot of descriptive writing and she mirrors the emotional situation of the characters with the landscape and weather. This is very well done.
By the end of the book the women and the town are ready and able to change. This is a book about female empowerment and learning what you want in life in order to find fulfillment. The book preaches no great messages to the reader which is a relief and deals with issues which are understandable to most of us. I am not sure that we would all want to engage in a canoe trip or to garden naked but the author offers this closeness to nature as a way to find yourself in a form which is not patronising or pretentious.
I wish that I had liked the book better because it is well written. Unfortunately, I found that the book dragged during the first bit and that I could not really engage with the whole concept. The idea of female empowerment through closeness to nature and bonding in a group is a powerful and popular one but it is not something with which I can easily identify and I, therefore, found it difficult to identify with the women and their quest for self-fulfillment. I think that other people may find this book more to their taste.
