This book is an impressive guide to self-publishing. Alison Baverstock has produced a fine overview of the subject, with support from other experts, with whom parts of the book have been co-written. Baverstock provides a step-by-step outline of how an author can arrange editing, design, printing, distribution, publicity, and marketing for their book. One of the best features of this book is the large number of case studies, in which authors share their experiences of self-publishing.
There is a lot of up-to-date information about the links between self-publishing and the digital publishing revolution (ebooks are described by one commentator as the biggest thing in publishing since Gutenburg invented printing). Baverstock's book shows signs of hurried publication, with many typographical errors, and quite a bit of repetition. I would say that both the editing and design do not meet the highest standards advocated by Baverstock - the case studies are presented in unattractive shading.
I think this book would be more credible if it was self-published. Baverstock makes the claim that her book is the first major title on self-publishing by a leading publisher. At the start of my writing career, the Bible for the process of independent publishing was Peter Finch's How to Publish Yourself, issued by Allison and Busby in 1987, fully 24 years before The Naked Author streaked across the stage. While focussing on self publishing as a commercial venture, Baverstock also writes in a very positive way about the scope for enthusiastic authors to find satisfaction in small-scale publishing. Having had books published by a couple of mainstream publishers, while self-publishing other works, I strongly recommend Alison Baverstock's book to anybody setting out on self-publishing.

Foreword by Mark Coker, Founder of Smashwords.com New digital technology, falling production costs and a new type of company offering publishing services have contributed to self-publishing becoming a viable option for writers, rather than a poor second to finding a commercial publishing deal. Written by a publishing consultant and author, with plenty of advice from other industry professionals, this book offers an objective analysis of the processes and companies involved in self-publishing. It helps you to analyse your objectives, define and meet the needs of your audience and looks at the right kind of content for self publishing. It also provides insight into the editorial processes you will need to put your content through, how to commission services from freelancers and companies and how to get a product worthy of your name. It helps you to understand format and design options, and key issues concerning distribution, sales and marketing. Self-publishing is a costly venture and this guide will help you to scrutinise your investment choices and produce a more professional-looking product.

Review
'A clear-sighted, cogent and thorough analysis of a part of the business often fraught with emotional and financial perils. The case studies Alison Baverstock provides are especially illuminating and her dispassionate approach will prove a valuable asset for those who intend to or are interested in self-publishing' --Peter Straus, Literary Agent

Looking from the outside book publishing is just getting some words on a page and shipping it to a shop for readers to buy. Oh but the truth is so much more. With the rise of self-publishing the uninitiated fall fowl of many trips and traps. Alison's book gives us on the outside a chance of getting to grips with this opportunity in a structured and guided way.

Full of down-to-earth common sense as well as a comprehensive guide to the whole self-publishing process. Various case-studies give a personal perspective on the experience.
There is so much good advice here it will take more than one read-through to absorb everything that Alison Baverstock has included in this book.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is considering becoming an indie author.

I found the advice on self publishing interesting and it made me think about my own experience. Some of the tips would have helped me to deal with the process of publishing more easily. I would have liked more information about the sort of packages some companies offer to authors or where to find it. If you are thinking of independent publishing it clarifies the issues.

Full of incredibly useful information. Perfect for the Self-Publisher. There's stuff you're rarely told, and certainly not so much in one source.
I strongly recommend it. Chapter on proof-reading your own work makes particularly sound advice.

If you ever think about publishing a book, read this book first. It takes you through the whole labyrinthine process of self-publishing, including all the aspects you might not have thought about, and above all makes it clear that in today's ever-changing world self-publishing is likely to be a major way forward, and does not need to be bracketed with 'vanity' publishing.
