This isn't a corporate cash-in collection. NYC man was compiled by the barely-alive star himself, but don't worry, there's hardly any guff about Edgar Alan Poe here. It opens with the standout track from recent offering The Raven, Who Am I, then goes through the whole back catalogue of both his solo career and the Velvet Underground. That means classics such as the jangly Sweet Jane, tranquil Walk On The Wild Side, and the almighty Perfect Day and Satellite Of Love. A lovingly-compiled and essential compilation.

Whoever made the selection for this 2-disc set deserves a medal. Reed’s much maligned albums like Sally Can’t Dance, Rock ‘n Roll Heart and Growing Up In Public are well represented by heir best tracks such as Kill Your Songs (albeit a live version), Temporary Thing and The Last Shot. I am pleased that for once someone ignored the critics and just got a lot of the good songs together. The tracks are not arranged chronologically but that just makes the listening experience all the more interesting. Highlights on Disc One are Street Hassle, I’ll Be Your Mirror and Ecstacy. On Disc Two, the music leads up to a climax with The Bells right in the middle and my other favourites here include the live Heroin, the beautiful and moving Satellite Of Love, Dirty Boulevard, Rock Minuet and of course, the poetic Pale Blue Eyes. It’s great hearing these masterpieces out of the context of their original albums, it certainly makes them stand out more as individual songs. I strongly recommend this album to those who would like to investigate Reed’s wok as well as to the long-time fans.

The positive elements of this compilation include the participation of Lou in the track selection, remastering & presentation of this twin-set. I err more towards a negative slant- the selection is problematic- we've had many Lou/Velvets compilations (Retro, Walk on the Wild Side, Perfect Day, The Best of Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground etc) and even box-sets (the Velvets' Peel Slowly & See, the Lou boxset Between Thought & Expression)- so a new compilation has to offer something different.
NYC Man only does this to a degree- I'd have preferred the Velvets stuff (as great as it is) to have been left out- we all know they were great and no serious fan of music is without, at the very least, the four official VU albums. As this was an alternate take on Lou's career I was expecting more from the solo years from the early 70s onwards. Many albums with tracks worth investigating are left out, eg Growing Up In Public, Mistrial, Lou Reed, Songs for Drella, New Sensations. I'd have rather seen I Love You Suzanne, Rock&Roll Heart and Soul Man turn up than Sweet Jane or White Light/White Heat. I'd rather have had tracks from the Velvets reunion than the original LPs (I love the 1994 take of Beginning to See the Light- wonderful phrasing by Lou).
Lou has made plenty of great records apart from Transformer, Berlin & New York- so why just a track each from albums like Blue Mask, Ecstasy, Magic&Loss, & Set the Twilight Reeling (& why only one track from New York?). This seems a contrary collection- a bit like David Sylvian's Everything&Nothing- I'd have rather it had been between the Island introduction series and Sony's Essential one.

This is the first collection of Lou Reed and Velvet Underground songs on the same album, put together by the man himself, remastered and put in a beutiful digi-pack. All the classicks are here, "Sweet Jane", "Rock and Roll", "Walk on the wild side" and "Perfect Day", but also a great deal of lesser known songs, such as the wonderfull "Street Hassle", "The Bells" and "Shooting Star"! These songs are Lou`s favourites, and it should also be the fans favourites as well! If I had to take one album to a desserted island... NYC Man!

Listening to this you hear tracks that you thought you knew really well- that you can then hear again as for the first time. It genuinely is exciting- hearing notes I bever heard before.
Only grudge- we all have favourites that we'd want included- mine would be New York Conversation and Good night Ladies. Hugely recommended- can the same re-mastering be done to Transformer? Please?
Hugely recommended.
