This particular pair Netgear powerline adapters (one XWNB5201 and one XWN5001) ought to work very straightforwardly. The old 200 series pair worked right out of the box – no problem. This new set doesn't work. The access point unit has a wifi facility that simply does NOT function. It shows a BLUE LED light not green, which would indicate it was fully functional. There is no mention of blue LED malfunctions in the very, VERY confused (I'm being polite here) setup and trouble shooting booklet. The Netgear website only amplifies the confusion and pointless repetitions in the booklet. At no point is there a line by line set of instructions on setup. Most of the information is there, but not in a logical order and in the confusion a number of things are lost or poorly explained. So it's a great pity because these things are, when they work, very effective.

In a nut shell I have a big old house with a crappy Superhub from Virgin Media here in the UK. The wireless signal will not reach and to the other side of the house on the floor above. I do not want to buy a new router or mess about creating a bridge with another router. I just want a plug and play and this is what I got. Pretty simple solution. The question is... did it work?

Originally bought a TP-Link TL-WA850RE Extender but found it dropped out all the time. No good for gaming!

After hearing stories of all these types of devices have connections and stability issues like the TP-Link Wifi dropping out I took a risk with this one. It was a lot more expensive TP-Link (£20) this (£80) however after connecting one plug into router and mains via provided ethernet and the other plug into office upstairs I made the connection when the "Netgear_EXT" access point showed.

Test speeds seem very good. Averaging around 34MB download and 3MB upload although I am on Virgin's 60MB plan. I do a lot of streaming but no downloads other than software updates including Xbox updates etc. Reliability also seems spot on. Not noticed it drop out. Streaming netflix/lovefilm/youtube all the time and gaming on the PS3 and Xbox One has seen no drop outs.

One issue I have had is creating a secure network. At the moment anyone can access the 'Netgear_EXT" access point but there is instructions on to make it secure manually via a computer. I just do not have an ethernet on my Macbook but will borrow a friends laptop to sort it.

It works for me and I am over the moon. Now all gadgets upstairs can connect to it. :)

Superb! Now have internet/wifi everywhere in the flat. Our wifi router is at the back of the flat (in a victorian terrace house) and previously trying to get a wifi range extender to bounce the signal to the front of the property was infuriatingly unreliable. Now, by plugging in the adaptor near the router (and connecting with an ethernet cable) and plugging in the wifi access point plug in the sitting room (front of house) we now have very good wifi at the front plus an ethernet connection for the TV. Set-up was relatively simple - and I'm no tech expert! (I did spend quite a long time initially worrying why the wifi light on the access point wasn't going green .... but apparently it stays blue!).

Delivery incidentally, quite amazing. Ordered Saturday afternoon after a lot of research and deliberating - delivered 11.30ish Sunday morning (albeit at a price!). Internet/wifi up and running shortly thereafter.

Easy to use but unreliable at best

This was the second set I've purchased and in just a small flat performance has been average. Large packet loss (unstable connection) in the receiving room and I found in the end I'd have to power cycle the unit every morning just to maintain connection. Wasn't certain it was these but became so frustrated that based on Amazon reviews I bought the Devolo 1200Mbps equivalent (best money can buy, I think) and have not had to power cycle more than once in two months and connection is fast and reliable. Looking back I probably tolerated these more than I should've done, I get irritated now just thinking of the time spent crouched over these plugs rebooting and waiting for lights to go green. Unreliable at best.

After reading reviews on this product I was undecided whether it would work to a decent standard, I use these plugs 1 in the house next to the router and the other in a sound proofed studio in the garden which previously had a very weak signal, I couldn't even buffer low quality videos on Netflix.

After literally plugging these things in, and using the wired connection, the internet in the studio has improved 100% it streams HD videos without any load time.

Ive not figured out how to improve the wifi signal emitting from the plug itself, but the wired connection works REALLY well!

Awesome product works really well, very impressed, would recommend.

These devices work very well. This is the second set I've bought now. BUT they're really truly incredibly hard to set up. The instructions are 100% garbage and don't even seem to relate to the product in the box, suggesting you need to push buttons that don't even exist! But if you persevere and have a little general networking knowledge, you can set these things up to be true extenders (Same SSID as other networks) and connected securely. The only other minor niggle is that the diagnosis LEDs on the front are permanently on and VERY bright, so I've covered mine up with tape.
