I ordered two - one of them works really well. However, the second one turned out to be used (and re-sold to me) It didn't come in the original plastic packaging and when I tried to set it up it already had a user name registered and didn't work... so, mixed reviews; 5 stars for the one that worked and minus (-) 5 stars for the other one...

Its nice to have a piece of network kit that is easy to set up and just works. This is one such item. Netgear has clearly put a lot of effort into simplifying initial setup, to the point that if you have a WPS (Wireless Protected Setup) button on your existing router, you only need to press a couple of buttons to get it working.

So, what does it do? Actually, it can perform two different tasks, acting as either a Wireless Access Point or as a Wireless Extender. Both of these tasks give you WiFi connectivity where you haven't previously had it, but the method is slightly different.

Most routers nowadays have WiFi built in, but if you need WiFi coverage away from your main router (if the signal gets too weak to use in the remoter parts of your house or garden) you need another WiFi device. You can connect it to your router using ethernet cable, which gives faster results but involves cabling. This is "Access Point" mode. Or you can position the extender inside the coverage of your existing WiFi router so that it will relay the WiFI signal to devices that are further away. This doesn't involve any cabling, but it means two wireles "hops", from your computer to the extender and then from the extender to your internet router. This is Extender mode. I suspect mode people will want to use Extender mode because it is so much easier to install.

Setting the Extender up in Extender mode is really straightforward if your router has a WPS button. You need to connect it wirelessly to your existing router, which you do by plugging it in near your router pressing the on/off button, and when it has started up (it takes about 60 seconds) pressing the WPS buttons on both your Extender and your existing router.

When I was asked to review this WiFi Extender by Netgear I was delighted to take them up on the offer as I live in a very rural location in Scotland and to add to the fun I live in a stone built cottage that has walls so thick it has caused problems with WiFi signals in the past.

The Netgear EX6100 AC750 Wi-Fi Range Extender arrived in a neat box which has lots of information about the extender on the outside and made for interesting reading prior to opening. I was pleased to see that this unit could be used as a booster to your existing WiFi or as a new WiFi access point, it being dual mode. I planned on using it just as a WiFi extender in my home.

As Ive been using a different WiFi extender by Netgear for the last few months, I was already familiar with the set-up process using the Netgear Genie, so it wasn't that daunting to me setting this unit up. I suspect a few people who think about getting a WiFi extender worry that they will be horribly difficult to set up, but no they are not. If I can do it, anyone can. I often don't read instructions fully prior to having a fiddle with things to see how they work and generally only fully read instructions if I am having problems figuring out how to work something or how to install it. This superb WiFi extender is in my opinion, simplicity itself to install. My last Extender I installed via the web on my iMac (large screen) this Netgear EX6100 AC750 unit I set up on my iPhone and that's a pretty small screen ☺ but it was easy to do.

The important thing I had to do was set it up initially close to my router, which is in the living room. The close proximity to your WiFi router is only required during set-up.

This is a decent dual-band high-speed wireless extender that supports modern security principles. It has a single RJ45 port in addition to it's wireless function which can be used to create a wired connection to a device without wireless connectivity. The extender can be configured by a device plugged into this port if desired.

I installed one at a friends house and connected it to a Virgin Media super hub router. The automatic configuration button process didn't quite work and although the extender appeared to be configured, devices were unable to connect to the internet. I'm an IT professional so I didn't spend any more time using the automatic configuration and just I plugged a laptop to the RJ45 port and configured it manually. This might be a bit daunting for a novice but it is straightforward and Netgear provide step-by-step instructions. I see from previous reviews that some people have had this issue while others haven't so obviously its inconsistent in this regard. Marked down one star for this.

Once setup is done, you have two additional wireless networks which are the same name as your original wireless network with the suffix 2GEXT and 5GEXT respectively. Wireless access passwords for the additional wireless networks are the same as the original. I read a previous reviewer's report that the extender uses a different IP subnet for DHCP from your original router but I didn't have this issue. Its possible Netgear have patched the firmware since that review but I don't know for sure. I have not attempted to network between devices on the WIFI because the end user simply wanted additional internet browsing capability and not networking between devices.
