We have a Virgin router, in our house there are several levels and the signal couldn't penetrate the walls, or get very far into the garden, so this was a must. The good thing is that it was Netgear (they make the chipset for the Virgin router) and so to have all components from one company makes things easier.

To my surprise there is a button on the Wireless Virgin router which is the WEP button the manual describes, it's not labelled as such (it's got the Virgin logo on it) but is lit up, strange, it must be some kind of industry standard (you know how these instruction manuals can leave you wondering what you're missing), so the set up was easy enough for us.

The signal was boosted immediately and everybody then got one, it took a little configuring but we found that height worked best for us. The rule of being in the centre of where you'd eventually like the signal to end up was only part of the solution, there are of course many other technical settings to change on ones router e.g. Channel hopping, Frequency set to 5GHz...

In our house we had various different machines, makes and models so there was never going to be a perfect solution, but this was better than tin foil on a pan.

I live in a large house with thick walls and the router firmly planted on the window at one end with the office at the other. Fed up with having adapter cables running into the hallway to pick up a signal I decided to try out a range extender and the Netgear had the best reviews. I placed the extender in a bedroom upstairs that just manages a stable signal from the router and moved with my laptop under arm to the furthest bedroom where there is no router signal to be had. The laptop picked up the netgear extender and using the browser login it was easy then to identify and couple the extender to my home network. I now have good network and internet access throughout the house, in all rooms upstairs and downstairs on the extender. I switch to the router when I'm closer to that but I could just leave my laptop and phone on the extender.

I've found out that if you use an extender and ever have trouble switching networks back to the original router you will need to reboot your router to reassign an IP address to your PC, phone or other device. You can overcome this by specifying static IP addresses to all the items on your network but that does take a lot more know how than setting up the extender. The inability to connect to your router will only occur if it has been rebooted and you were logged into the extender and then look to move back to the original router network. If the router hasn't been rebooted since you were last logged into it then you can move too and fro between the router and extender to your hearts content without any connection problems

I'm in the process of building an office outside of the home even further away from the router and the extender will enable me to pick up the network in my new office build. That's what I was hoping for and I've not been disappointed. Overall I'm very happy with this product.

A disappointing waste of money

I usually prefer Netgear products as they are generally reliable. I also generally recommend Netgear products to my clients. However, this particular piece of kit is a complete disappointment. Whilst I purchased it from Amazon in the UK, the item I received was obviously intended for the French market as the packaging and manual were in French, which wasn't a great start. It was a pig to setup, and once running the connection has proven to be unreliable and very slow. The best I have gotten out of it so far is 6Mb/s. It was intended to boost the signal from one side of the house to the other, particularly for guests in our main guest bedroom. One of them said that to initialise a connection he had to go up to the extender, which would force the extender to connect to the main (Netgear) router and then go back to their room. The furthest I can locate it from the main extender to get any connection is about 15 feet through 2 walls. If anything it seems to be slowing down the signal I had before just from the main router alone, so will probably be throwing this extender out and finding something more useful.

Avoid like the plague unless you want to spend hours trying to fix something that has an inherent fault by design - go check the WN2000RPT threads on the forums, dropouts, repeated reboots required in the day, I had a V1 (and binned it back then) and now on V3 - same issues, just needed a cheapy to extend the signal whilst I set the rest of my network up. Wish I had not tried again, thought they might have ironed the fault by now, but same old tat. It's going back (despite hoping a fware update would sort it), its cheap for a reason you know!

Don't buy anything but dual band if you have a dual band router. Then speed is fantastic.

Excellent machine, great coverage. Sets up in about 3mn for each band with the WPS connect button. Then log into the extender using its IP address (or follow the instructions on the booklet) and under 'Advanced', configure for 'Fast Lane' technology. Then the download speed will be about the same as on the router. Upload speeds are slower by about a third but for me that is less important. Prior to this I had tried a couple of Linksys and a single band Netgear, which I all returned. Too unstable, too slow. But with the NETGEAR 4 PORT UNIVERSAL DUAL BAND you won't be disappointed.

PS: the machine adds an 'EXT' suffix to your SSID (the name of your router)so if you have a smartphone it won't connect automatically to the extender's network (you would need a repeater, not an extender, for that, but I haven't found a good dual band one). But don't worry, just download from the Android Market a little app called 'Best Wifi'. That thing works in the background will automatically switch you to the best network available when you're at home. And it's no drain on the battery.
