Netgear do know about the issue and have tried to help assist users (there is a massive thread on their support forum going back to 2015) but to date there is no fix - and my understanding is now they consider that issue closed as they are no longer actively offering support. Netgear assert that their current drivers support windows 10, but I can say confidently even with the latest (1.0.0.35) drivers that there are lots of issues remaining. To give some credit to Netgear, my understanding is they don't write the drivers, it's the chipset manufacturer Mediatek - so they don't have direct control over the driver team to make the required fixes.
Users from the support forum recommend at this point, if you are using Win 10 and having issues, to trade it in and get an alternative device that is proven to work in a Windows 10 environment. By all accounts, the hardware is excellent and well reviewed, but as it does not have appropriate drivers for Windows 10 Anniversary Update, so if you are running in that environment it's a lottery of whether it will work or whether you will have one of a number of issues.
If you have issues where its not detected at boot or keeps acting like its being unplugged on Windows 10 try this:
1. Go into services (type services into start and press enter)
2. Find NetgaerSwitchUSB > Right click and press properties > Startup type disabled
3. Make sure A6210 Genie MFC Application is enabled in startup (Task manager, Startup tab *Right click the task bar and start taskmanager*
4. Reboot, after this the issue should be gone and you have a flawless WiFi adapter.
Also ensure you download the latest version of the driver from Netgears website as the disc is obsolete.
Edit, randomly drops connection which is not acceptable for my use case as I stream media from my PC
I purchased an Amazon Warehouse version of this (i.e. customer returns) so the adapter looks to have been in use for quite a while as the hinges of the adapter were coated in a thick layer of dust which I had to clean off. The original box was also not included with the Amazon Warehouse version.
Important to note that the device is not plug-any-play. To enable the device, I had to go to Netgear's website and download the driver software. This enabled the device but also required installation of Netgear's very dated looking software. The driver software was relatively easy to download and install compared to other products.
This is an expensive adapter but initial tests show that it's worth that extra expense.
I've tried it on two different machines with similar results.
BSOD whenever the driver installs! I have had very little use out of this adaptor running on Windows 7 PC. I have never had this amount of hardware trouble with any devices, or anything that I have ever installed in my life, further more I reached 100.000 YouTube views and 500 Subscribers on my channel and was meant to perform a gaming live stream which got totally destroyed due to 3 BSODs while live-streaming in an hour.
I had to revert back with a system restore and then cancel my big event. After 10 years with Netgear. I am saying goodbye.
The drivers are the issue. After running a system health-check all points lead to the driver downloaded and installed from Netgear web-site. I could not even install from CD without a BSOD. I can tell you straight. I never had this many BSOD's occur, if any before buying this product.
Thanks for ruining what should have been an incredible occasion.
