NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Melody III Coffee Machine Blue by De'Longhi

No Mess, no Fuss. Just Great Coffee

Make a statement with the curvaceous NESCAFÉ DOLCE GUSTO Melody III. This machine is not only eye-catching, but with its maximum 15 bar pump pressure, creates your favourite drinks in a matter of seconds. The maximum 15 bar pressure pump is essential for delivering the golden crema that you get from coffee shop quality coffee.

For maximum freshness, our coffee pods are sealed after the roast has been ground to deliver to you a delicious aroma and full flavour. And with a wide variety of roast & ground coffees, delicious hot chocolate drinks and coffee shop specialties you'll wonder how you ever coped without it.

Because the coffee grinds stay in the pod there is virtually no cleaning either.

With the Melody III, your drink is ready in 3 simple steps.

1. Pop in a pod
2. Move the lever to hot or cold
3. Stop the water when you're ready

Hey presto, your coffee, your way every time.

Our machines need virtually no cleaning, however a wipe down of the machine and rinse of the capsule holder every few weeks is recommended.

And remember to descale every 3-4 months or 900 uses, to keep your machine working at its best.

What Makes our Pods so Smart?

Inside every pod we use carefully selected ingredients. Then we add a little bit of technological magic. Different drinks need different amounts of pressure to release their full flavour. For example, an espresso needs high pressure to release that delicious coffee aroma and taste and milk needs less. So our clever little pods are designed to regulate the pressure so whichever drink you choose, it's made just the way it should be.

My machine is now over 4 years old and is still working fine, never had a problem with it once, so massive credit to nescafe for making such a reliable bit of kit. I use it fairly regularly, though did have a spell for about 4 months where it wasn't used, so that's also a good indicator of the quality.

It's easy to clean, just run it on hot without a pod. I've also put a bit of fairy liquid through it and that's been fine. I haven't descaled it yet, even though it says you should every 6 months and haven't noticed a problem there, but I probably should soon.

It's basically a glorified kettle that punctures a coffee pod and runs a stream of hot water through the pod and out a spout. This gives a nice bit of froth to the coffee. I would say it could have been made to run the water hotter. Don't expect a boiling hot coffee if you make it with milk.

I've tried most of the flavours. The mocha is unique but not the best, the flavoured coffees I found a bit sickly and anything that uses a double pod (mocha, cappucino, vanilla etc) ends up being double the price per cup, so if that's the type of coffee you're after, I wouldn't recommend a dolce gusto as I haven't found a flavour that beats the instant packet brands. Only buy a dolce gusto if you're after strong, percolated/restaurant quality coffee, as it has 4 decent flavours for this (lungo, americano, cafe grande, espresso) and they only require 1 pod per cup and all produce a superior tasting coffee when compared to instant. The supermarkets tend to stock a few flavours and there's a good website service that's reliable.

My method I use to get the best out of the machine is to run it until the colour of the stream starts to fade.

The Nescafé Dolce Gusto Melody 3 is a coffee machine that utilises Dolce Gusto capsules (or 'pods' as they're often called) to make a range of different coffees and hot chocolates. The functional design behind the machine is relatively simple. It heats up the water (or cools it down if it's for a cold drink) and then passes the water through the opened pod capsule to produce the desired drink.

The first point that really needs to be made is how the coffee machine is so incredibly easy to use. Simply fill up the tank at the rear of the machine, insert a pod capsule, switch it to 'hot' or 'cold' and away you go. The machine takes around a minute to heat up from having not been used recently. However, once heated up, it's ready to make drinks pretty much immediately for a good ten to twenty minutes after your first beverage. This is very handy when making multiple drinks.

The actual process of making the various drinks is very quick. If it's just an espresso that you're after then you'll have it poured in less than twenty seconds (and if you're anything like me then drunk in less than thirty!). For other drinks (such as a Latte Macchiato or a Cappuccino) you need to use multiple pods to make the beverage (i.e. the 'coffee' pod and a special 'milk' pod). This will add to the preparation time a little - but nothing to really get bothered about.

When in use (i.e. when actually pouring the drink) the coffee machine is particularly loud. Like when you're in a coffee shop, it buzzes like there's no tomorrow - really churning the boiling hot water through your little coffee pod. So if you plan to make yourself a snazzy little beverage whilst in the same room as a sleeping baby - think again.

I spent a fair while weighing up the pros and cons of various machines before I settles on this one. To me, this was the best compromise between the Tassimo and the, hugely expensive, Nespresso machines (whose pods are, ironically, amongst the cheapest on the market!). I read somewhere that the more "bars" a machine has, the better the drink it will make. This has 15, the Tassimo significantly less (hence it was swiftly ejected) and the Nespresso significantly more, a LOT more, hence, maybe, the high price tag.

For the more financially fiscal such as I, this is obviously the best bet. Also, the price fluctuates a lot on this, I got mine for £40 (it was, at the time, the same on here as on the High St offers) so it may be worthwhile waiting a little while for the price to drop again.

It's a very nice, modern looking piece of kit when it comes out of it's rather nice packaging and smaller than I had imagined (which was good as we don't have a lot of counter space). Set up is very simple. Rinse out the water container (which just lifts away) and run the water through the machine once on ho and once on cold and then you're ready to go. There's a detachable cup base which you can affix at various heights for different size cups. The lowest setting just about allows a standard latte glass to fit beneath it.

It's wonderfully simple to use. Just press the button on the side and watch it turn from red to green (for GO!) in about 30 seconds. Lift the metal flap, pull out the pod drawer, insert pod and lower the flap to lock the pod in pace and pierce the lid.

Then just flick the lever to the side, one way for hot drinks, the other for cold, and watch it fill up.
