About the Author

Giorgio Gandolfi is editor in chief of FIBA Assist magazine, the primary magazine of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Gandolfi has served as a European consultant for the NBA Coaches Association and has been a member of the Italian Basketball Federation Coaches Association since 1974. Founded in 1976, the NBA Coaches Association membership reads like a who's who is coaching as every coach in the league is a member. Through the Celtics-Lakers rivalry in the 1980s, the 1992 Team USA Dream Team, and the unparalleled skill and marketing power of Michael Jordan through the 1990s, the National Basketball Association has become the world's most famous sports league over the past 25 years.

Explains the tactics of NBA brilliantly and gives good advice for sports coaching in general. Some of the detail is heavy going for non basketball fans, but worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's a reason these guys coach in the NBA 9 Oct. 2009
By Kevin Sivils - KCS Basketball Enterprises - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book has some of everything in it: game strategy, program organization, teaching ideas, coaching philosophy, defense, offense, you name it.

Better yet, it is readable! It comes with diagrams that are understandable and not so complicated that nobody can understand what is being shown. Some coaching books I have read have outstanding information, but the manner in which it is described is so complicated that it becomes an exercise in translation to understand the information. Coaching is about making the complicated simple. This book does that.

Beginning coaches can get stuff from this book and so can veterans. It is a valuable resource for any coach.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a golden mine of information, but not a desert either 4 Nov. 2015
By Benoit Lelievre - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've read that book as a fan in order to gain a deeper understanding of a sport I love very much and it delivered somewhat. Not all the volume was relevant to what I was seeking and it could've went deeper in every chapter, but I gained sharper insight on the main offensive and defensive strategies as well as some keen details of the game, such as what makes a good defender in a game and what are the symptoms of shot deficiencies (as well as how to fix them). I'm conscious that it's a bit of a money grab, that it should've been a lot more layered and subtly broken down, but I liked it somewhat anyway because I'm a crazy person.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs more visuals. 15 Feb. 2010
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I like this book a lot. The only problem is that I bought it as a person who never played basketball growing up. If you're unfamiliar with the game as I was you may find yourself wishing this book had more visuals to accompany the text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas, thoughts, teaching tools, but drags on at times 19 May 2013
By Daniel R Diaz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I read the book from front to back. It was interesting if you're into basketball and coaching/teaching strategies. Each chapter was written by a different coach. Some sections were excellent as the coach explained the idea of the drill/play while others were just x's and o's without too much explanation besides this player goes here and does that. I love coaching and studying basketball strategies, plays, drills, etc.. for fun, but at times this book dragged on and lost my attention, which is hard to do with me and basketball strategy.
