Anna Katharine Green's Mystery Stories Of Violet Strange is an unabridged and highly recommended audiobook mystery anthology following the adventures of New York City debutante Violet Strange and her secret adventures as a professional sleuth for a private detective agency. Nine tales of gumption, ingenuity, and perseverance even in the face of danger fill this engaging listening presentation so ably and dramatically narrated by Shelley Frasier. Strong, independent, and resourceful, Violet Strange is a heroine that leaves the listener yearning for more. (8 CDs, Playing Time: 9 hours, 36 minutes)

The reader is excellent. The cover art is misleading, as it led me to think the stories were set in the 1930's but the style seemed from an earlier era. I altered my copy to better reflect the era of the stories. Some reading on Wikipedia about the author showed that the stories were written in and set in the late 19th Century. The stories are interesting, but none of her characters could ever be poker players since every thought and emotion sweeps over their faces. The women are all described as frail and of delicate sensibilities. The fact that I've read some popular fiction of that period helped me slog through. The writing is a little uneven, since some passages, especially those which deal with legal matters read very modern, while the dialogue is florid as are the description of the characters and their actions. Interesting to the mystery enthusiast. Compares more favorably to the Uncle Abner and Randolph Mason mystery stories of Melville Davisson Post than with Agatha Christie.
