Product description

Review

As in her previous books, Dolan marries text and illustration to very funny effect, with an abundance of visual jokes, speech-balloon commentary, and details that advance both the story and the hilarity ("I ain t afraid of no goat," quips one of the investigators as the pigs head into the "incredibly creepy chicken coop" that might hold the key to the mystery). The large cast, clues tucked into the background, and feisty banter should easily hold up to multiple readings.
Publishers Weekly
The final surprise is a delight, as is the slight bathroom humor that accompanies this perfect-for-Halloween tale.
Booklist Online
Don t think too hard about the ridiculous plot the fun here lies in the supernatural barnyard bedlam, displayed in oversized spreads crammed full of speech balloons and subplots. Readers familiar with Dolan s "Weasels "(BCCB 2/13) will recognize the chaotic comedy and cunning animal characters, and they ll know to search the spreads for rewarding detail...For those who prefer Halloween silliness to Halloween spookiness, this will be right up their alley.
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"

While this is definitely a children's book, Dolan adds some masterful one-liners for adult readers' benefit that are sure to cause chuckles (one Ghost-Hunter says, "I ain't afraid of no goat!"). Dolan's mixed-media illustrations balance the creepy with the silly and are filled with hysterical details, visual puns, and speech bubbles, so readers are sure to find new things on repeat readings. This is one haunted farm readers won't want to skip.

The art is packed with speech balloons, slapstick humor, and visual cues advancing the goofy story. Elementary-age readers will howl at the silly twists, turns, and transformations.

About the Author

Elys Dolan (Author, Illustrator) Elys grew up in a part of Sussex that consists almost entirely of trees and cows and she was named after a department store in Wimbledon. She's never let either of these things hold her back and Elys recently graduated with distinction from the MA in Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. Elys has been awarded second place in the Macmillan Prize and was also shortlisted for the Waterstone's 'Picture This' prize. Elys works predominately with ink, newfangled digital witchcraft and coloured pencils of which she is the proud owner of 178 but can never seem to find a sharpener. Based in Cambridge, when Elys is not drawing she grows cacti, collects pocket watches and spends altogether too much time in the company of other illustrators.

I love a picture book but I especially love a LARGE picture book. And they don’t come much bigger than The Mystery of the Haunted Farm from the award-winning artist and author, Elys Dolan. Each page is packed with beautifully detailed scenes that are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

Take a trip to Farmer Gregg’s farm and join the Ghost-hunters, three highly qualified pigs, on their quest to find out what is spooking his farm. You will bump into zombie ducks, ghost cows as well as Donkula and Frankenhorse! However all is not as it seems and the pigs investigation leads them to the mysterious chicken coop on the hill! Are you brave enough to join them?

This is a perfect read for all ages and would be a perfect bedtime read with the lights off and the torch on. Just be careful you don’t read it on a night when the moon is full. You have been warned!

If you like this, check out Elys Dolan’s Weasels, or There’s a Lion in my Cornflakes by Michelle Robinson and Jim Field.

As the author once told her friends, "Sally used to babysit me and my brothers!" As a person, Elys is one of the loveliest people you could meet. As an author and illustrator, she's also one of the most talented. Even in our office, when I get one of her books delivered for me to take home, it is always met with enthusiasm from my colleagues, who admire the great stories and the delicious detail in the pictures. I love the style of Elys's illustration, the simple boldness, the bold simplicity, it's beautiful.

A bit tricky to read aloud due to it's 'comic book' style, but a nice story if your child isn't scared of zombies & warewolves
