About the Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh where he qualified as a doctor, but it was his writing which brought him fame, with the creation of Sherlock Holmes, the first scientific detective. He was also a convert to spiritualism and a social reformer who used his investigative skills to prove the innocence of individuals. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This Saddleback edition accurately and fairly dramatically portrays the efforts of five Union Army POWs who escape from a CSA camp using a hot-air balloon. Days later, they crashland in the Pacific and barely make it alive to an unknown island. Thanks to lead character Cyrus Harding, an engineer who is a combination of MacGyver and the Professor from 'Gilligan's Island,' the castaways are soon masters of the island with food, weapons, pottery, a water-powered elevator, etc. Yet time and again they are seem to have help from an unseen presence. Then pirates arrive on the scene and things turn really dicey.
THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND was one of Verne's most exciting novels, the Saddleback version being equally dramatic and fast-paced. The artwork is compelling and young readers should be caught up in the adventures of Harding & Company.
My only beef is that Saddleback, once again, renames some of the characters. Harding, the genius heading up the castaways, was named Cyrus Smith in the 1874 original. Likewise Verne's Bonadventure Pencroff becomes Saddleback's Jack Pencroft.
Having said that, I did enjoy THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. It should be a hit with readers in the 9-12 age category. Recommended.
