Scots-born but now Canada-based, Tony McManus has built a solid reputation as a master of the folk / Celtic acoustic guitar over recent years. This new set moves him outside of that comfort zone, crossing a mysterious boundary into the world of classical music. Using a steel-stringed instrument is unusual in this field and it allows McManus the opportunity to explore this new material while maintaining a recognisable style and sound of his own.

While some pieces are familiar (Villanesca's Spanish Dance, Satie's Gnossienne #1), McManus stretches into the repertoire, including a setting of a medieval hymn and the Couperin tune which lends the album its title. For this reviewer, however, it is the four readings of Bach works that really stand out, in particular a magnificent take on the Chaconne in D minor, transcribed from the Partita #2 for solo violin, which is little short of a masterpiece.

If you enjoy solo guitar music in whatever genre, get this album (and / or any of his previous offerings) and if you get an opportunity to see Tony McManus live, take it.

Despite the fact that I'm a guitarist I don't usually like solo guitar albums. Often it sounds like the artist is more interested in showing you what he/she can do than play nice music - not so here. Don't get me wrong the playing is great and there's some intricate and technical pieces; but what comes through is beautiful tone, great phrasing and peaceful music.

Tony McManus is of course world famous for his steel string acoustic guitar playing of mainly Celtic/folk music, but in this CD he has
crossed "boundaries" to present his interpretations of repertoire normally only played by classical musicians. Although none of the music is originally for guitar, several of the tracks will be familiar to classical guitar fans: especially Bach's Chaconne in D minor & Prelude in E major (both originally for violin), Couperin's Les Barricades Mysterieuses (harpsichord), plus Granados' Spanish Dance No.4 and Satie's Gnossienne No.1 (piano). What is refreshingly different here is both the sound of the pieces on Tony McManus' resonant PRS Angelus steel string guitar and the lovely and intuitive interpretations of a world-class folk musician.

Tony McManus is considered the best Celtic guitarist in the world. Whilst this is probably true it doesn't give justice to his talent in translating the music on this album to guitar. Beautiful.
