At $61 Canadian Dollars it is expensive by any stretch and to be honest, as good as it is I wouldn't pay that much for it - look around for a good second hand copy.
The book comes with a choice of 5 different images on the front cover (all screenshots from the Riven game) so it is often pot-luck as to which one you can get hold of but the content is the same.
It is a fascinating insight into Myst, the sequel Riven, all the work and people involved, the complexities involved in creating the game and just how much time and effort was expended in making it all work.
Is it any wonder that Cyan would not make a 'Real Time' version when asked by fans, given that it took 4 years instead of 2 to make it as it is?
What I enjoyed about this book was not only the whole story behind the legend that is Riven but also how it helped me in using programs like Bryce and Vue - the descriptive detail on how Cyan created the images within the game gave me a lot of pointers (and in fact showed me where I was going wrong) when using 3D landscape software.
All in all a fascinating read with lots of beautiful colour images from the game, concept art and interesting anecdotes. The book itself is large (very large in fact) so you will need a tall shelf to put it on but it is beautifully finished and will make a good conversation piece so I suggest you leave it lying around on a coffee table - it will always spark an interesting conversation with visitors.
An excellent book if a little expensive - look out for a good second hand copy.
I finally gave in and bought it one day through amazon, and I'm very glad that I did. The full page pics from riven are amazing, and there are a few new bits of info scattered around here and there that even a hard-core fan might be pressed to have known.
The centerpieces of the book include a two page spread of the map of D'ni found in "The book of Tiana," and many of the full page spreads (my favorite is the blown up image of the prison island).
Buy this if you are a hard-core fan. You'll really appreciate the details that have been included in this.
