HASH(0x887c7bd0) out of 5 stars The Odyssey of Tom Tanner 8 Aug. 2015
By Vagabonda Reads - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
“You say hero. No. Not a devil. Not a hero. Not God. Just a man. Addie helped me see it. Just a man. But a man who has to carry some things he’s learned to understand” (p. 11)

And so continues Tom Tanner’s redemptive journey in the concluding novel of Diane Munier’s masterful saga, My Wounded Soldier: Book Two: Fight for Love.
Now married to his beloved Addie, and having taken her two children as his, Tom sets out to build a life worthy of the family blessed upon him.  But the mantle of husband and father does not come easily to Tom. Fueled with a passion once thought lost and driven by a need to construct a life unencumbered by a past that still haunts him, Tom discovers that to succeed in his new life often requires a surrender to the struggle.  Whether it be a jar of pickles thrown at him by his hot-tempered wife, or the subtle disapproval he engenders when sharing a dipper of water with a man of color, Tom recognizes that there will always be lessons to be learned, there will always be actions to be taken, and, at times, there will exist the need for quiet resignation. For Tom, as one wound begins to heal, another makes its presence known. And as his life with his Addie and their children go forward, Tom comes to the understanding that surrendering his heart to the tender mercies of love will not only ease his wounds, but lead to the worthiness he seeks:

“I would never break the chain I had with her. I knew what I was here to do . . . and I pledged to do it the day Johnny come for me in the field. This was my piece of earth.  I intended to inherit it and draw them to me one day . . . and one day . . . and one day . . . for life.  For the rest of it . . . I would serve.

And come the day, I’d lay me down for good and go back into this sweet earth, come that day I wanted them to know . . . I loved them.

This was my Promised Land, my lambs upon it . . . my life.” (p.110)

Exquisitely written, again, breathtaking at times, Munier gifts the reader with an abundance of sacred moments: Tom, tenderly washing his baby, Janey, written as the sacrament that it is.  Addie and Tom -- their lovemaking powerfully revealed through quiet, simple words of love -Munier, using words that are so potent and evocative, we feel the need to give the lovers their privacy. We see Tom, holding his ailing father’s hand, igniting the fear every child has at the thought of losing a parent. And as Munier masterfully crafts vivid imagery and sensory experiences through her writing, not only can we envision the Tanner barn rise up to the sky on red cedar beams, but we are there to inhale the scent of the rich, red wood.

As any reader of Diane Munier has come to learn, her table is replete with an abundance of well-crafted and colorful characters. The voice of Tom Tanner rings true, clear, solid. As does Addie’s, as the reader is gifted with glimpses into her mind and heart. The author’s ancillary characters are so well written that we want to join them at the dinner table and break bread with them.

Once again, Diane Munier, through this extraordinary tale of Tom Tanner’s odyssey, has given us the keys to the kingdom. Give you heart over to Munier's Wounded Soldier and discover the truths in your soul.

HASH(0x88b7cf34) out of 5 stars Truly a magnificent book, one I would recommend to all who love a good historical western romance! 9 Aug. 2015
By Liberty Ann Ireland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition

I love history almost as much as I love Cowboys. And my most favorite period in history to study, read about and learn about is the American Civil War. Well you can believe I was totally doing the 'Teacher Oooh Oooh Me!' when it came down to signing up for the opportunity to read and review this book and thankfully I was given the opportunity. I'd never read any of Diane's work before but as the subject matter really appealed, I was sure I would get on fine with the author. That was a major understatement!

Diane is part historian, part Literary artist and part storyteller. She gathers these multi-hued threads and weaves them together in a wonderful and fascinating way, one that keeps the readers rapt attention on both the threads and yet wondering what the end product will turn out to be. Tom is her hero who, after returning a changed man from the war, was ready to settle down and love Addie for the rest of his days. Now not only a new husband but an instant Pa to her young children, he wants and needs to become the amazing man and Pa his dad was. It is 1866, the year after the end of the war. He has determination, a fair amount of money he earned by re-upping and the abundant love of a very good woman by his side. Hoping and praying, Tom steps into an uncertain future. I love these characters. I felt like I was in the story with them and they were my friends, maybe even my relatives. Diane had an incredible gift to be able to create that feeling.

I truly cannot put into words in an adequate manner how this story affected me. It was broad and sweeping like the American landscape yet intimate enough to feel like home and family. Diane's wording is what does it. It takes the mundane and makes it almost reverent. And the lovemaking - for in this book it truly is - goes from the tender and loving to almost sublime and spiritual. Truly a magnificent book, one I would recommend to all who love a good historical western romance!

HASH(0x886bc930) out of 5 stars Epic historical romance ! 8 Aug. 2015

“My Wounded Soldier Book Two Fight for Love” is the exciting conclusion of “My Wounded Soldier Book One Fight for Glory.”
Diane Munier writes in a vibrant and descriptive way so that the reader feels like they are right there in the middle of the love scenes, the action, and the pursuit of of danger.
After Tom has won over Addie and married her, he must now learn about the ins and outs of loving and raising his new family. With intense love and devotion from Addie by his side, Tom accepts certain new members into his family with reluctance, but before he knows it he is protecting and defending them to the death.
He has spent much of his life thinking he is not important, but then is surprisingly reassured that he is the family’s true leader and hero.
From reluctant son, to patriarch of the family, we see the emotional growth of Tom Tanner--his heart and his loyalty, and how he wins the Fight for Love.
This book is FIVE STARS in regards to the exciting story, colorful characters, and skillful writing.

HASH(0x886a793c) out of 5 stars My Wounded Soldier (Book 2) 12 Aug. 2015

I read the first book in one day, but this (the second of two) I savored - reading it slowly over a 4 day period. It describes Tom Tanner's struggles to find his place within his own budding family, as well as in his father's already established one. He's a proud, hardworking man, bending only for his beloved wife Addie. Their intense passion for each other is a thing of beauty, making me tear up more than once. Watching Addie's son Johnny find in him the strong father he so desperately needed was truly heartwarming.

Tom's love and appreciation of nature, along with the mystery of life and death is touching. He thinks about his deceased brother looking down at him and smiling: "I watched the sky, the floor of heaven, some said. The clouds fragments of white, torn to shreds and drifting like memories giving way to clear blue." Such a pretty passage in a wonderful story. I loved it!
HASH(0x88809dc4) out of 5 stars what each and every character looks like and feels 24 Oct. 2015

Diane Munier is a highly gifted author and this book, just as the first in the series My Wounded Soldier: Book One: Fight for Glory, is no exception. She paints an interesting picture of not just our two main characters, but of Johnny and all of the other supporting cast, as well. Her depiction of the farm land, houses, period clothing, what each and every character looks like and feels, is so richly detailed and wonderfully involved, it will truly make you feel like you are right there with them experiencing everything. I have been a fan of Ms. Munier's stories before she was a published author and she is like the finest wine, as her exceptional writing gets better with each and every book she writes!!!!
