About the Author
John Knowles was an animal-lover from childhood, treasuring his stick insects, pet rabbits and toy zoo animals. He left school at 16 to work on a farm, handling heavy horses and undertaking back-breaking tasks such as hoeing. He attended agricultural college, becoming a farmer himself just seven days before his 21st birthday. Spotting a gap in the market for chickens bred for meat, he contacted the US breeders of the Cobb chicken. The venture flourished, and on John's worldwide business travels he indulged his passion for wild animals and zoos. Eventually the sale of an interest in his agricultural businesses enabled John to buy the 414-acre Marwell Hall estate in Hampshire. This opened as Marwell Zoological Park in 1972, and has helped ensure the survival of endangered species such as the Przewalski's wild horse. Passing the zoo into the ownership of a trust, John finally ended his involvement with Marwell in 2006, having received an OBE for services to conservation.
