Part of the Order's time is spent fighting open threats, e.g. Napoleon, but much of the ongoing story concerns their fight against another secret organisation called the "Promethians," a ruthless international campaign with an idealistic vision to remake world society but which uses murderous methods to try to achieve it.
The main action of the story begins in 1814: as the hero, who is the "Irresistible earl" of the title, meets for the first time in a decade the woman who he had loved and lost when he was a very young man and she was a teenager. He was unable to marry her because he was about to take up a dangerous, secret posting abroad during the Napoleonic wars. Thinking herself deserted, our heroine married instead a worthless aristocrat.Read more ›
For one thing, I admit I did enjoy reading about Jordan and Mara, as they are both very likeable characters. Jordan is the type of hero that you rarely see starring in those novels, and it was refreshing. Mara could've been a lot more dramatic and annoying and unreasonable given the circumstances and events, but thankfully, Foley decided not to put her in that role, making her seem a very strong, confident and appealing character.
There were many secondary characters who were given prominent roles in this novel. It seemed like Foley was preparing us for her next novels - Drake is the obvious one, but I suspect she might still have something up her sleeve for Beau. A lot has been revealed in this novel about the kind of work that the Order is involved in, and things are starting to escalate as Foley is tying up all the loose ends here and there.
The plot and the characters are very interesting, but I really believe that Foley could've done so much more with it than she currently has. I have been an avid fan of her books since her Ascension and Knight Miscellany series came out, and I thought "My Wicked Marquess" was such a great kick-off to this series that I had really high expectations, and maybe that's why I'm not as satisfied.
Finally, I feel like in this book, the focus was mostly on the Order and their events and tying up all their loose ends a lot more than it did on the actual romance between Jordan and Mara.Read more ›
