Product Description

About the Author

I wrote my first novel in my minivan at 45. At 50, I walked the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere of the adaptation of my second novel, Must Love Dogs, starring Diane Lane and John Cusack. If you have a buried dream, trust me, it is NEVER too late! I guess it’s no surprise that reinvention is the overarching theme of my novels and my life. I like to think the heroines in my (eleven and counting!) novels have helped lots of women find their own next chapters, and I also take great joy in sharing what I’ve learned so far on the Reinvention and Writing pages at ClaireCook.com. My books have been called everything from romantic comedy to women’s fiction to beach reads to chick lit. Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me what you call them. I just hope you read and enjoy them! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I was getting to really like this book as I was reading it. Claire Cook handles a consort of characters with ease - although some are rather more chariactures than realistic people, but they were fun. A large family of siblings with their relationship worries and personalities drew me into the story about Sarah who is looking for love after divorce. And then the book stopped and before I knew it I was reading the trailer for the next 'episode'. It felt like people had started clapping before the last notes of a musical performance. Irritated by the sudden appearance of the sample of book 2 before I had realised that book 1 was over, I was left disappointed. So there was going to be more of the same with hardly anything happening and no real insight into why one man ends up being the good-un and another, who seemed to have a lot of charm, turns out to be a user? Well, I'm not buying any more. If I want a soap opera I'll watch television.

I picked this book up as a free download and whilst I have heard of the film have never seen it or know anything about it, so the story was completely fresh to me. I enjoyed it immensely, a light hearted fun story of a forty year old divorcee, Sarah, attempting to enter the dating world by placing a lonely hearts ad. There are some very funny moments in the book which has a host of larger than life characters, including some very cute kids who to be honest did seem a little too precocious for pre-schoolers. I liked the way the author kept the story moving with the three "candidates" who had replied to Sarah's ad, as I was never quite sure which one of them she was going to have a relationship with as the plot got quite twisty turny.

To sum up, a good romantic comedy which I enjoyed although I did find the ending to be rather abrupt and unsatisfying, almost as if a couple of chapters of the book were missing at the end.

I particularly liked the supporting characters in this tale. Sarah's family are lovely and eccentric, especially her father. I also enjoyed the scenes in the classroom reading about Sarah at work with the children. Dolly, too, was great fun.

This was a pretty easy, reasonably entertaining holiday read. I read it after Madame Bovary so its maybe not fair to compare this slight piece to one of the great novels about character but to be honest i could have done with a bit more here. I liked the central character but would have liked to know about her motivation and reason for acting as she does. There is one amusing set piece when all the characters in the book sort of collide which is well done. Everyone seems to dress really badly.
