Format: Audio CD
Such is the popularity of both versions of `Pictures', Ravel's orchestration and Mussorgsky's solo piano, that there are a huge number of recordings to choose from.

The two versions here are represented in full, Herbert von Karajan's 1966 recording with the Berlin Philharmonic and Russian pianist Lazar Berman's solo piano interpretation recorded in 1979, both of which sound remarkably lively and fresh considering their age.

Recommended, because it's surprisingly difficult to find the orchestral and piano versions on one disc and these recordings do each one full justice.

My all time favorite orchestral work also includes the original piano version of this masterpiece. This is the ultimate version, conducted by Herbert von Karajan, gently and at the same time powerfully performed by Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
I'm raised on ELP's version from infancy, but Ravel's original orchestral version surpass everything. Melodic, exciting, dramatic and a great final.

One star off due to some disturbing hiss from the original tapes from 1966 and a poor booklet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pictures in original pianoforte and orchestral 8 Jun. 2016

A very nice presentation of the classic piece in the original piano version and the orchestral transcription, I liked the Berlins apparent use of an alto saxophone on The Old Castle rather than an English horn. I just like saxophone, double reeds are great of course.

Track Listings
1. Pictures At An Exhibition (Orch. Version Maurice Ravel)
2. Pictures At An Exhibition (Piano Version)

This is completely wrong. When I ordered this particular recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition," it was the track listing that had been the deciding factor. Each performance, supposedly, was contained in a single track; an idea that appealed to me because it would make programing the playback on my CD player very convenient. Instead of the two tracks advertised, it contains a total of 31 tracks! Fifteen tracks for the Orchestral Version by Maurice Ravel and sixteen tracks for the piano version. I have no interest in the piano version and I an sending this one back without even opening it.
