Product Description

Review

'For officers interested in questions as diverse as military incompetence and the formation of national strategy, this book will repay many times over the hours spent reading it.' Marine Corps Gazette

Book Description

This book explores the motives, preparation, objectives, contact and consequences of Italy's war of 1940, which ended the country's role as a great power and reduced it to the status of first among Germany's satellites. What Professor Knox demonstrates more clearly than any previous biographer or historian is the limits of Mussolini's power.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough account of Italy's foray into War 20 Sept. 2007
By Lehigh History Student - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is one of the most thorough accounts of Mussolini and the Italy's foray into the World War. The author provides an almost overly thorough analysis with literally almost every sentence packing maximum information punch. If you want to have a one book summary of how Italy became involved in war in Europe this is a great start. It glazes over some areas but when it comes to the time period covered this literally is a day by day and event by event account of the war. Top notch analysis provides wonderful diplomatic discussion and very clear conclusions. For those interested in diplomatic history this is a great book to take a look at. I have read over thirty books related to Mussolini and world war II and this is easily in the top three.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather tedious and avoids any discussion of actual war 6 Sept. 2013
By John Desmond - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
One might wonder why the author avoided any coverage of the Italian army's actions in Libya or Ethiopia or in the course of the bulk of WWII. He covers every twist and turn of Mussolini's diplomacy as if it mattered and in excruciating detail but doesn't talk much about any actual fighting. A good resource if you're investigating Italian politics in the 1930s, otherwise not worth it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing waste of paper. 24 Oct. 2015
By adepss - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This was a total disappointment.

There is very little objectivity or reasearch by this author apart from quoting sources that were openly anti-Italian in the first place.
His hatred for Mussolini gets in the way and the amount of narration we are forced to suffer to support the authors bias is tedious.

Most probably the WORST book on Mussolini and the Italian effort I have ever read.

Until researchers start reading Italian accounts as well as other no anglo and no pro ally or pro german works as their sole source of information, the better the academic world will be, there is very little one can find praise for this book other than to say the title is original.

Don't bother and save your money, this volume is a waste of your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Defeat is not an orphan. 7 April 2001
By Frank Paris - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
One of the very few books on Mussolini that shows the true causes of Italy's failure in her war aims during World War II. MacGregor Knox does not fall into the trap that so many other historians show when retelling the total and abject failure of Italy's land, sea and air forces during the last world war. This is not simply a retelling of a dictator leading his country to ruin.
The poor leadership of Italy's military leaders are shown in full light (Marshal Badoglio's vascillations, General Graziani's timidity and Admiral Cagnari's fabian tatics). The book also shows Mussolini's problems with the monarchy, the church, and the unwillingless of the Italian people themselves to be drawn into another world war.
A must read for anyone who wants to read an unblemished account of Italy's performance in the last world war.
