The first in Erik Schubach's series of interlinked though standalone novels concerns a burned out Rock and Roll star and a deaf woman with self esteem issues. Mandy comes home from a life of touring and drinking too much to "heal" and while visiting the music school where she had found solace as a child, she meets Annabella. Annabella is deaf and has always found hope in Mandy's music. The chance meeting develops into dinner and and and... The minor characters are well developed and the story moves at a nice pace. The characters act in a way that seems "right" for who they are and especially the way Mandy runs away from hurt and shuts out the world while she tries to sort out her emotions. This strikes the reader as a true reaction although the lack of "real world" contact does seem a bit stretched at times. I like the way the characters pop up in other books and through the series you see how they change and grow.

Oh bloody hell, more tears and heightened emotions. What an absolutely fantastic story. Finally I find out how Mandy Fay Harris and Anabelle Marie West get together, and what a route they took. If ever a story had an alternate ending, this is the one I would have expected it from, I am so happy that it turned out the way it did. Erik Schubach, a master in suspense, I just love the way this author writes with just an undertone of sarcasm. Brilliant book.
