Product description
Review
I met Ariane a few years back and since our meeting I've only used her for all my bass tracks. Her inventive style, expertise, and time are exceptional. I suggest that everyone look at her book and listen to her playing. She underscores the true meaning of "foundation with style and groove". Keith Olsen Grammy award-winning Producer (Journey, Foreigner) I've read a lot of books about how to play the bass, and I've read lots of books about music theory, but this was the first book I've read that covers music theory from the perspective of a bass player. Ariane teaches you to be a musician fist, and a bass player second, which is how it should be. The book is appropriate for all levels, even the absolute beginner with no prior musical experience. Experienced bassists will learn new ways to understand how music works, and how the bass fits in with the rest of the band. Dan Callaway Bassist Ariane Cap has given us a remarkably comprehensive and accessible work suitable for bassists and all musicians who play with bassists. In chapter 13, entitled "Technique Basics" she begins by stating: " Be mindful that learning proper technique is as much about the mechanics of the body and bass as it is about building consciousness of what you do and how you do it." From my medical and musical viewpoint, it is a marvelous rarity when a master musician simultaneously addresses ergonomics, instrumental mechanics, and the substance of creating beautiful musical lines. Ariane has succeeded mightily. Robert E. Markison, MD Hand Surgeon, Musician Clinical Professor of Surgery, UCSF School of Medicine Co-founder, UCSF Health Program for Performing Artists Music made with grace, ease, and proper alignment sounds more beautiful! Ariane's chapter on posture contains information vital to the health of your body and hence, the body of your music. As a somatic educator with a 30 year practice, I've seen disharmony and imbalance due to teaching techniques that lack this kind of instruction. Ariane's approach can save you from pain and physical therapy! Highly recommended. Play on! Alison Post Somatic Practitioner, Craniosacral Therapist Author of "Unwinding the Belly" The clear, well-designed chapter on technique incorporates ergonomically sound playing methods, good posture and careful positioning of the hands to reduce muscle effort and musculoskeletal strain while playing the bass." I first started playing Bass over 30 years ago and have had numerous lessons and bought a truckload of books, instructional videos over the years. After a long lay off I returned and found Ari's book on Amazon and it is simply the best book / advice I have ever received. There is no doubt Ari is an excellent player and tutor, she is very diligent and passionate about her subject. The book is so well structured and thought out it will help any one whether a beginner or an advanced player looking to polish their skills. Theory is often overlooked but so important and this is presented in a very user friendly manner. There are 89 videos included which provide a visual demonstration of the material presented in the book and there is no doubt I have learnt more in one month than in most of the previous years. My only regret is that it wasn't available all those years ago. I for one have now signed up to one of her online courses but there is absolutely no commitment to do so.

This is the book of an excellent online course. It is extremely carefully thought out and well organised and basically does exactly what it says on the tin. Over 20 lectures, each one requiring a minimum of about 100 minutes to complete, it introduces the bass player to key musical concepts in a digestible form and provides a wealth of exercises which are excellent at breaking down left and right hand techniques and isolating and removing bad habits while promoting good ones. The author is passionate about teaching and gives frequent advise and tips on how best to learn, particularly with reference to the PORA method. The course is arranged around a variety of online video demonstrations given by the author, with the student invited to play along. The tone of the course is friendly and inclusive, and is pitched in such a way as to be useful to all levels of ability. As a beginner to intermediate level player I find the lessons stimulating and challenging, taking me on average about two weeks each to complete to a sufficient level of proficiency to enable progression. They are very well structured with each lesson building on the last and offering fresh challenges. The course has already enabled me to uncover various issues with my technique that I was unaware of and has provided to clear road map as to how to address them. In addition my appreciation of musical theory is progressing steadily. In summary this is an excellent, well-organised, practically useful course that is well worth its relatively modest cost.

The title says it all. Theory for the bass player. If you study the book, watch the videos, do the exercises and practice most days then you should get the knowledge and develop your ability to take your playing to the next level. Ive found the book incredibly useful and informative, but it takes commitment. There is a good chapter on technique but I suggest you need to have a little knowledge of the instrument first. It is not a "how to play" book. Likewise a rudimentary knowledge of music would be very helpfu. You dont need to be able to read music, but sooner or later you will probably feel it necessary and this is not the book to teach you. Complete beginners might benefit from a starter book or a few hours studying you tube videos first.

How this book gets five star reviews is beyond me. I'm a reasonably good bass player and wanted to increase my theory knowledge. Well, there is nothing at all in this book that most half decent bass players won't already know. Perhaps it's aimed at people who just play by ear and want to understand what they are doing.
However, despite my knowledge, I found the book exteemely difficult to follow as it is so poorly structured and and extrememely badly written. If I'd written this book, I'd have thought - "I can't submit this for publication - it's hopeless". There are little tests throughout called "Test you knowledge'. A lot of the time you can only understand what she's getting at by looking at the answers as it's all so badly worded, badly phrased and poorly explained. She tells us that we can solve the 'dominant minor' probelem by using a 'beautiful scale' - the harmonic minor. And that's it. No explanation of how and when to use the scale. On the other hand, the author seems to have gone out of her way to make the blindingly obvious or blindingly simple, as unintelligible as possible - perhaps to make the reader think they are getting value for money.
As I've said, if you are half decent at playing the bass (or only a quarter decent) this book is an expensive (£24 for a fairly slim paperback printed on low quality paper) waste of money. You'd be better off buying a new set of strings. I've only given it one star because you can't give it no stars.
The book is bent and creased too - although this review is for the contents, not its condition.

I have read many syllabi, lesson plans and observed many lessons and this book has the unmistakable quality of a teacher who is passionate about their subject and has an instinctive understanding of the way we all earn, it is a rare gift.
I have been pursuing the course for a month, it's not easy ,but the little things i have done are beginning to fall into place. Through the videos and chargeable extras, like the wall chart (It wasn't available in the uk and was sent directly from California), they provide the context for studying. I will undoubtably subscribe to Ari's on line lessons at sometime in the future.
Will I stick with it? I don't know, it is certainly very challenging although all your needs are anticipate by Ari. I have a particular ambition for these studies and as it is the last item on my bucket list it has my full attention
