This is something of a departure from Alex's usual works. A collection of poems with a short story almost as an epilogue (or is it a prologue for a future work), very few of which take up two pages or more. The poems range from almost third person observations (Soldier and Family instantly spring to mind), to the wildly imaginative Harmspear, as well as multifaceted pieces such as Black Hole and Avoid My Eye.
The finale is perhaps of its time definitely - The Last Human. It says so much and yet gives little away.
And that's what good poetry does; it gets you thinking.
The Sea Between the Stars, at the very end of the anthology is a very short story, that wouldn't be out of place in a sequel or prequel to The Way Knight (also worth a second read), especially now in the void left by the likes of Game of Thrones. Again, it's a piece that is short, but works on a number of levels.
All in all, another excellent read from Mr Wallis. And it leaves you wanting more - always a good sign.
