My seventeen year old son has been training as a boxer for about two years and it is only recently that he has been regularly taking protein in the form of protein powders. He has tried quite a few makes of protein shakes and one of the best he has found which has also been recommended by his boxing coach is 'MaxiNutrition Promax Sustain and Rebuild'.
Research has show that between 1.5 grams and 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight is recommended for boxers and although it is always better to get our protein from food if this is not possible or convenient, protein shakes are certainly a good alternative.
This tub of MaxiNutrition Promax Protein Shake Powder Chocolate Flavour contains 1.12 kg. In a single serving Promax provides 30 grams of high quality triple release protein formula that delivers the all important amino acids to your muscles in as little as twenty minutes and should last for up to four hours. Promax also provides your body with glutamine, calcium and magnesium.
You are supposed to mix one and a half scoops of Promax Chocolate Flavour with 250ml of water, shake or mix in a blender and enjoy. However the word 'enjoy' was not in my son's vocabulary when he first tried the Promax Protein Shake, he thought it tasted horrible. After a bit of research online he discovered that some people actually mixed their protein powders with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk. So the second time he made the shake he added the same amount of powder to 250ml of semi skimmed milk. Verdict?, so much better. In fact he quite enjoyed drinking it.
The recommended use of Promax is as follows: On your training days you should drink one shake after training and another mid afternoon. On the days you do not train you should drink one shake mid morning and one shake mid afternoon. This is what my son does and he finds that using this schedule gives him the most benefit from the protein shakes.
It is hard to quantify MaxiNutrition Promax's ability to improve muscular strength. However since my son has been taking protein shakes he does feel that his muscles have become more defined and he has certainly had more energy. He has also found that running has become easier and less tiring (this has always been the part of boxing training that my son does not really enjoy). My son will keep drinking the MaxiNutrition Promax Protein Shakes as he strongly believes that although it is expensive it is one of the best on the market.
Formerly Maximuscle before rebranding themselves as MaxiNutrition to appeal to those who don't spend all their time at the gym, this is a premium priced protein shake but, while they pride themselves on sourcing the best ingredients in a crowded marketplace where many brands have some very dubious ones, they've rather overdone it with the sweeteners - the chocolate flavour is fine if you have a sweet tooth but can be a bit much to take even in a 250ml serving if you don't. The name may make you expect something thicker, but it's basically like drinking chocolate flavoured water, which goes down easily and avoids making you feel overfull.
More of a recovery shake than a muscle builder (the advised intake is one shake on days you don't train, two on days you do with one serving after training), I've not really noticed any difference over a couple of weeks and it hasn't had any effect on appetite or energy, though results may vary. Frankly I can't see myself in a hurry to try one of their other flavours after this.
The tub comes with a measuring scoop, though by the time it reaches you you'll probably have to dig for it.
I had to dig around for a while to find the spoon, but it does come with one. I usually mix with milk, but recently I've been using water, the powder mixes quite well with both, especially with my mixer bottle with mixing aid. The taste is fine, almost pleasant but more than satisfactory, and chocolate is the only flavour of powder I would ever go for.
It's same as usual in terms of the effect, in that the results are noticeable when I started my old routine up again. As someone who has a history of mild stomach problems I found this to digest well and not cause any aches or cramps. Overall I am once again very happy with the now Maxi Nutrition.
The main addition to this powder is amino acids and vitamins which while both welcome are difficult to pin down the effects of Flavour is smooth and having tried the banana flavour can say that they are not too artificial or sweet, helped by the low sugar levels in the product.
Overall this combines to a decent product, supplied in a strong tub, mixing well with water and providing a good amount of protein per serving. It's up to that individual athlete if they feel the additional elements justify the increased price from a pure product but I'm not entirely convinced. Despite this I can't doubt the main powder and therefore this comes recommended from me.
