Perahia is superb in these pieces. Huge range of tonal colour, played with a lightness and clarity that works very well on a modern piano.
Playing such as this commands my attention..
Bravo !

I purchased this CD mainly for the Handel. For some reason Scarlatti's music doesn't appeal to me. If you like Handel played on piano, these are superb interpretations, and the sound recording is excellent. I have the Richter-Gavrilov recordings, which although played in quite a different style, are also superb. I also have Ragna Schirmer's recordings, which although perhaps not quite in the same league as Perahia's, nevertheless have a warmth and charm which I find endearing. I sincerely hope that Murray Perahia feels inspired to record the rest of the Handel keyboard suites at some point. They are wonderful pieces of music, and I know I'm probably a heretic, but I prefer them played on piano.
VINE VOICE
The excellent Baroque piano compositions get distinctive, dignified treatment at the hands of Perahia. Handel’s top sonatas are easily on the level of Bach and the Harmonious Blacksmith variations are the pinnacle of that all - and so is Perahia’s playing. The Scarlatti selection is a bit questionable, as the album gets a little samey towards the end. But Sony Classical sound is beautiful and the album very positively ends up on the sunny side.

Coming to this CD twenty years after its release it is very, very good and has stood the test of time as one of Murray Perahia's great recordings. Handel's multi movement suites and chaconne contrast well with with Scarlatti's single movement sonatas: perhaps Handel's music offers greater variety with its dance movements, airs and variations, but Perahia captures the magic and poetry of Scarlatti's single movement sonatas.
Both composers were born in 1685, the same year as J.S.Bach whose music feature on the magnificent series of recordings which Murray Perahia has made since.

I am not a professional muscian but Perahia's piano play seems delicate and rich in nuances to me. The recording is top quality with fantastic dynamic. I like Perahia's style more than the highly praised recordings with Mitsuko Uchida.

Magnificent, especially the "Blacksmith" piece. Enriching, lively powerful and passionate. There is a lot more to Handel than the Messiah and Water Music

A recording of great music by an exceptionally brilliant pianist.
I can find nothing bad to say about the choice of music, the playing or the recording.

Another classic gem with Murray Perahia in superb form, as usual. Loved it!
