Having recorded the complete piano concertos, Goldberg Variations and all the English Suites in the past few years, in 2003 Murray Perahia embarked on another Bach project. This time, he chose a chamber setting, a collaboration with the renowned Academy of St. Martin in the Fields orchestra, with whom he focused on three more concertos.
Two of them are arranged with flute and violin, besides piano, as high-profile instruments, which is not a surprise at BWV 1044 concerto, composed for just the three instruments. More music is brought along with Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, which also features harpsichord, clavier or, as in this case, the piano.
Perahia conducts the orchestra at both works, bringing delicacy and smoothness, yet the overall impression is unmistakably Bach.
The final work of the album is the Italian Concerto for solo piano (BWV 971), fittngly ending the 55 minutes long recording, as it is inspired by the Italian concerto form of the Late Baroque, which Bach improved to perfection.
The American pianist proves that he is among the best Bach perfomers of the past 30 years.

VINE VOICE

Having recently purchased copy from independent Amazon dealer I have to say that as a real fan of Bach this CD is an excellent buy. Murray Perahia really gets into the feel of the music and although the popular Brandenburg No 5 is the only one selected it really comes through fresh and in a new light - the flute pieces are played beautifully and really fresh. Needless to say the Academy of St Martins in the Fields bring their own special sound which is recorded excellently. The supporting pieces of Italian Concerto and Flute Concerto really make this is good compilation especially if you want a Bach `taster`. Great listening for a winter evening. Recording is superb.
