Review

While Oxford had Morse, Whitstable, famous for its oysters, has Pearl . . . True to the tradition of classic crime, [Julie Wassmer] weaves a strong story into a setting that has more to offer than murder and mayhem (Daily Mail)

If you enjoy cosy crime fiction and you still haven't picked this series, then you are missing out (Alba in Bookland)

This is just straightforwardly excellent cosy crime ... Julie Wassmer really knows how to tell a story (Victoria Best Shiny New Books on Murder-On-Sea)

A tried-and-tested crime recipe with Whitstable flavours that makes for a Michelin-starred read (Daily Mail)

If you enjoy cosy mystery stories and good, solid whodunits, without gruesome details or gratuitous violence, Murder on Sea may be just your cup of tea (Bec Stafford)

If you like the TV series 'Midsomer Murders', then May Day Murder should be right up your alley (The Crime Warp on May Day Murder)

Book Description

The fourth novel in the Pearl Nolan series

Pearl Nolan is off on a short break with her mother Dolly, but Dolly has kept their destination secret and when Pearl finds out what they are actually going to do for a week she has mixed feeling about it.

She doesn't welcome instruction in cookery at the best of times and to discover that the week is to be hosted by famous chef Nico Caruso makes her heart sink. But she needs to get away and try and work out what she feels for DCI Mike McGuire who has been conspicuous by his absence from her life for the last few weeks.

In the beautiful surroundings of the Villa Pellegrini - so called because of its Italian decorative style even though it is situated in the Kent countryside - Pearl begins to relax and enjoy the surroundings, the cookery and even the attentions of Nico himself. Then murder intervenes and the Villa's guests are thrown into the middle of a police investigation.

This is the fourth volume in the Whitstable Pearl mystery series and it is every bit as good as its predecessors. I like Pearl herself and her mother Dolly and the background of cookery and food is interesting. This is a traditional country house murder mystery with a closed group of suspects but it is brought up to date though in fact the only additions which make it obviously twenty first century are microwaves and mobile phones.

It shows how the traditional mystery format is still relevant and entertaining. If you enjoy reading mysteries with a mixture of amateur and professional detectives then this series is worth trying . I shall be looking forward to the next book.

Loved this book and am sad I have come to the end of a most enjoyable journey. I really enjoyed being there, on the Pilgrims Way : the ambience of the wonderful Villa Pellegrini ,the stunning scenery with the verdant gardens and grounds on the Great Stour River, the mouth watering food, the beautiful opera arias... I also loved the humour in this book and I think of all; the four Whitstable Pearl Mysteries, this is my favourite so far. Why? Because it appeals so much to the senses through a very well thought out story and ingenious plot. The earlier books do too, but this was very different!. The vivid descriptions enabled me to see the captivating locations and scenery, taste the delicious food (mainly Italian) marvel at the stunning interiors. It is all so very sensual and goes in this order: sight, taste, hearing, smell and touch. What a treat! The author's knowledge of Italian food and artistic presentation was put to use. The book conveys a clear sensitivity to Nature and beauty, an understanding of people, a love of music and literature, an interest in history ,particularly of this area of Kent, a wide general knowledge including forensic science and police .work which all contribute to making this a delightful and entertaining book.I only hope it may reach my TV screen as I have read in a national paper that the rights to the series have been bought by a production company. This is a series that could run and run and run.......I look forward to the next book in the series. Julie is brilliant. Her imagination and research and love of Kent and particularly Whitstable and area and the intriguing story line make this a fascinating book.

I really enjoy the Whitstable Pearl mystery series, with each new book I look forward to first of all visiting the beautiful Kent countryside and the town of Whitstable which I visited many years ago and loved. Secondly I also love being thrown in to the lives of Pearl, her family, friends and her food!

Murder on the Pilgrims Way is, I think, my favourite so far in the series, set in the idyllic countryside at a beautiful country retreat. Pearl and her mother Dolly have left Whitstable behind, Dolly is treating her daughter to cookery course at Villa Pellegrini and the course is taught by charming celebrity chef Nico Caruso.

The house is beautiful but in true murder mystery style Pearl and Dolly's fellow guests are hiding secrets. What starts of as an idyllic break with fine food, delicious wine and charming company ends with the grisly discovery of a body, instinctively private detective Pearl starts delving in to the lives of her companions. Who is the murderer in their midst?

Full of English country charm, delightful characters and a hint of romance this is a great read which I would recommend to lovers of cosy mysteries and Agatha Christie.

Thank you to Constable for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
