Pearl Nolan is off on a short break with her mother Dolly, but Dolly has kept their destination secret and when Pearl finds out what they are actually going to do for a week she has mixed feeling about it.

She doesn't welcome instruction in cookery at the best of times and to discover that the week is to be hosted by famous chef Nico Caruso makes her heart sink. But she needs to get away and try and work out what she feels for DCI Mike McGuire who has been conspicuous by his absence from her life for the last few weeks.

In the beautiful surroundings of the Villa Pellegrini - so called because of its Italian decorative style even though it is situated in the Kent countryside - Pearl begins to relax and enjoy the surroundings, the cookery and even the attentions of Nico himself. Then murder intervenes and the Villa's guests are thrown into the middle of a police investigation.

This is the fourth volume in the Whitstable Pearl mystery series and it is every bit as good as its predecessors. I like Pearl herself and her mother Dolly and the background of cookery and food is interesting. This is a traditional country house murder mystery with a closed group of suspects but it is brought up to date though in fact the only additions which make it obviously twenty first century are microwaves and mobile phones.

It shows how the traditional mystery format is still relevant and entertaining. If you enjoy reading mysteries with a mixture of amateur and professional detectives then this series is worth trying . I shall be looking forward to the next book.

I really enjoy the Whitstable Pearl mystery series, with each new book I look forward to first of all visiting the beautiful Kent countryside and the town of Whitstable which I visited many years ago and loved. Secondly I also love being thrown in to the lives of Pearl, her family, friends and her food!

Murder on the Pilgrims Way is, I think, my favourite so far in the series, set in the idyllic countryside at a beautiful country retreat. Pearl and her mother Dolly have left Whitstable behind, Dolly is treating her daughter to cookery course at Villa Pellegrini and the course is taught by charming celebrity chef Nico Caruso.

The house is beautiful but in true murder mystery style Pearl and Dolly's fellow guests are hiding secrets. What starts of as an idyllic break with fine food, delicious wine and charming company ends with the grisly discovery of a body, instinctively private detective Pearl starts delving in to the lives of her companions. Who is the murderer in their midst?

Full of English country charm, delightful characters and a hint of romance this is a great read which I would recommend to lovers of cosy mysteries and Agatha Christie.

Thank you to Constable for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

If you live in Kent and want a good murder mystery set in your location then look no further than this. An easy 5 stars as I did not guess again who committed the murders which is down to extremely good writing by the brilliant Julie Wassmer. Pearl and her family from Whitstable are brilliant characters, the descriptions of everything make it all feel so real. A small group of people on a cookery retreat with the famous Nico, what could go wrong? Murder, murder and a romance trying to get going but will it all be halted by the 'hot' chef Nico? Published today so order yours now.
