VINE VOICEon 7 March 2009
As a fan of Anne Perry and Victoria Thompson who write about 19th century crime life in London and New York respectively this is something different and equally as rivetting. Sarah Woolson is a lawyer in San Francisco so one gets a view of crime on the west coast of the US in the 1900s. She has the usual fight for recognition in a male bastion and receives an entree via her brother who shares the same initials. She flouts most traditions and challenges attitudes towards the place of women in a style which ruffles feathers but she continues to the pride of her aristocratic Papa but fury of stuffy brother Frederick. As well as highlights on San Franciscan life we learn about "rising rooms" - the new elevators, plitics on the W. Coast, banking intrigue and the rather dodgy life of Chinatown and young chinese girls. This is the 1st in the series and I've already ordered her 2nd. They are very difficult to locate these novels by Tellman but well worth the search.
