Dorothy L Sayers writes for people who have a brain or two in their heads. All the 'airport' detective writers could learn a lot from her. She is (was) erudite and intelligent and never wrote down to her readers. The only problem I have, not being able to read Latin - or for that matter only having schoolgirl French is that the Kindle editions don't give translations and that facility through Wiki or the dictionary's is very basic. However, the books make you think and never ever assume that you are an idiot. I absolutely love them, they are exciting and they are definite 'page-turners and yet there is none of the graphic horror situations found in the present day writers in that genre.

Dorothy L. Sayers was incredibly intelligent and this certainly comes through in her Peter Wimsey books. I think J. K. Rowling was right when she said Sayers couldn't resist showing how intelligent she was in her novels. I do think her writing style, particularly when it comes to word choice, is quite awkward and complicated. I think the best writing is simple and lucid. However, the plot of the novel was gripping and she steeps you in the writing world in which it is set so it was still quite enjoyable. I'm sure some will love her writing style, it just wasn't for me, but I can't deny she had a real talent.

DL Sayers worked in an advertising agency so this book (set in one) is a window into the corner of a departed prewar commercial world as well as a very interesting story

Lord Peter Wimsey is one of the greatest of all fictional detectives and 'Murder Must Advertise' presents us with one of his most intriguing mysteries. Set in the confines of 1930's advertising agency, Pyms Publicity. Lord Peter is called in to investigate the death of copywriter Victor Dean.
Not only is the story first rate, with all the expected twists and turns, but the atmosphere of the agency drawn from Sayer's own experience is vividly real. Sayers' was arguably the most complex of the pre war 'Queens of Crime' and this book certainly works on a number of levels. For those who are unfamiliar with either Sayers or Wimsey, this book makes an excellent introduction, and demonstrates why their popularity has persisted.
