About the Author

Mary ‘Molly’ Thynne was born in 1881, a member of the aristocracy, and related, on her mother’s side, to the painter James McNeil Whistler. She grew up in Kensington and at a young age met literary figures like Rudyard Kipling and Henry James.

Her first novel, An Uncertain Glory, was published in 1914, but she did not turn to crime fiction until The Draycott Murder Mystery, the first of six golden age mysteries she wrote and published in as many years, between 1928 and 1933. The last three of these featured Dr. Constantine, chess master and amateur sleuth par excellence.

Molly Thynne never married. She enjoyed travelling abroad, but spent most of her life in the village of Bovey Tracey, Devon, where she was finally laid to rest in 1950.

Unlike the first of M Thynne's mysteries, this book is pure hokey suspense, reminding me of early Patricia Wentworth. Drugs, night clubs, kidnappings, slick foreigners, all the trappings of those sorts of mysteries, including the innocent, yet plucky heroine and her faithful swain. We are uncomfortably close to Nancy Drew territory, and indeed it all comes right on the day. Top it off with plucky heroine realising that she does need a man to take care of her after all, and I am wondering if that third star is deserved. But it was engaging, even if naive.

From start to finish we are led down a path of intrigue; double dealing; murder and romance.Valient heroines and sturdy heroes, aged beneficent persons and silent wise detectives romp together to outwit dastardly villains and all comes right in the end.A thoroughly enjoyable pantomime experience .A good holiday read.

As with my review of ' Adam Braid' ,I think 3.5 stars might be fairer. Again the synopsis and excellent introduction set out the stall really well. This is ,as another reviewer, accurately says , very similar to early Patricia Wentworth territory. Seemingly helpless women ,, perfect man servants ,night clubs ,doped drinks etc etc.

However ,for me ,there are a couple of plot devices which give this book a bit of an edge and I found the ending to be rather well ,if predictably ,done. I totally agree with Ms Stewart ,that this is not really a Detective novel but an adventure entertainment in a late 1920's style. It is though still infinitely preferable to any of the dreaded pastiche books purporting to be written 90 years ago ....
