“Sometimes a reader needs to curl up with a deliciously good book and disappear from their own world for awhile. Murder Caribbean-Style spirited me away into a world that oozed with the charms of such exotic locations as Barbados, St. Thomas, Sint Maarten and Puerto Rico. Diane Rapp offers a gift to her readers: She whets an adventurer's appetite with zesty, vivid descriptions of fascinating out-of-the-way places at each port, sites that are unknown to many tourists. We are treated to descriptions of not only the duties of personnel on a cruise ship but, more so, their very human nuances.” Review by Doreen Cox.
Book Description:
When Kayla Sanders accepts a free Caribbean cruise aboard the Aurora, she gets sucked into a modern-day mutiny culminating in the murder of her ex-lover, Patrick MacIntyre. When Kayla was denied a well-deserved promotion, she resigned. Kayla’s shipboard friends applauded her bravery, but she knew the truth. Reeling from the painful humiliation inflicted by an unfaithful lover, Kayla welcomed an excuse to run home and hide. Living like a hermit in Colorado she worked days as a typist and wrote a Caribbean guidebook at night.
Four years later, Kayla arrives onboard her old ship and savors the VIP treatment afforded a published author—until Patrick falls dead at her feet. Plunging into a frenzied investigation to discover the killer before police arrest her friends, Kayla bumps into Steven Young every time she uncovers a clue. They soon join forces to unravel the mystery and spark a fledgling romance. Like a tightrope walker balancing between passion and peril, Kayla risks her life to unearth the truth behind Patrick’s death and free herself from his memory. Should she trust Steven and risk another broken heart—or worse?

About the author

Diane Rapp became an entrepreneur when she started her own dog grooming salon in Santa Barbara, California. She spent the next thirty years as a small business owner; she sold real estate, started an office supply/copy center, and performed free-lance advertising design. During all those years Diane wrote stories as a cure for insomnia.
After writing a tour guide book to the Caribbean together, Diane’s daughter gave her the idea of writing a mystery set on cruise ships in the Caribbean. "Murder Caribbean-Style" and "Murder on a Ghost Ship" are the first two novels of a High Seas Mystery series. Readers meet the main characters of the series and learn about life aboard a ship while solving murders. There is danger and romance mixed in with the action. The third book in the series, "Murder for Glacier Blue" was released in August of 2013. The novel takes the reader on a cruise to Alaska with an art heist, murder, and a wedding planned for Glacier Bay. The most recent novel in this series is "DNA Stalker: Revenge or Justice?" This book follows two of the characters from the first books, Natalia and Jason, in their own adventure on the high seas. They must protect six sets of twins from harm as a Stalker tries to hunt down a man who was part of the Jonestown Massacre forty years ago. It's an intense thriller that is a standalone novel.
"The Alphas" is the prequel to the Heirs to “Howl of the Wolf”, book 1 of the Heirs to the Throne trilogy. The novel introduces the dogs and wolves that eventually formed a pack that travels through space to inhabit Drako. The story is also a mystery. The heroine solves the murder of an old friend and discovers why her beloved German Shepherd was stolen.
"Howl of the Wolf" introduces the planet Drako, telepathic wolves, and the crew of the space ship that took sanctuary on a planet that banned technology. In "The Havenshire Resistance", the second book of the series, Queen Krystal's teenage daughters learn to use their special inherited powers. Krystal and her daughters lead an army of Samurai women, telepathic wolves, and commoners to save the kingdom from an evil usurper in a dramatic battle. The third book of the trilogy is "Dragon Defense". The planet is under threat by an Institute battleship. King Donovan must train teenagers to operate forbidden defense technology while his daughters make friends with a flock of wild dragons. Will his crazy defense tactics save the planet from destruction?
"Dragon Knight: and the Heart's Blood Curse". It is a modern fantasy that adults will enjoy reading to their kids or read for themselves. When a witch turns a magnificent dragon into a puny human knight, he must complete a quest to regain his powerful dragon form. A demon is stealing dead musicians from the mundane world and forcing them to perform songs that change people into evil beings. Now he plans to steal a living musician, Jimmy Buffett and destroy the barriers between the worlds. The underworld will rule supreme. Dragon is the only creature who could destroy the demon. Wizards in the mundane world use smart phones as wands to protect Buffett from capture while dragon and the young sorceress, Robyn, fight the demon in the magical realm.
“Golden Legacy” blends historical adventure with modern-day mystery in two time lines. Embarking on a harrowing treasure hunt, two daring heroines tackle the hazards of gold country more than a century apart. Ginny is a “modern” English gentlewoman traveling alone in the year 1888. Ginny is summoned to Ouray, Colorado to attend her injured brother in hospital. The gutsy woman strikes out to deliver supplies to a dear family friend in a hidden gold mine, armed with courage, a fountain pen, and two sharp hatpins. Switching to modern day action, Kayla must decipher clues inside Ginny’s journal to pass an inheritance test to prove her courage, ingenuity, and honesty and qualify for a golden legacy.

The only downside to this voyage meant she would meet up again with Patrick, her ex-boyfriend, who still worked on the ship. She had really loved this man while she had been on board. Yet he had been unfaithful to her. Since then, Kayla had written a guidebook about the Caribbean, which had been well received. During this voyage, she intended to take the opportunity to update her book. All seemed to be going well, until one day, out on a tour of one of the islands, Patrick suddenly falls dead.
He was not well liked by most of the crew aboard ship and Kayla was afraid her friends would be blamed for his death. Therefore she takes it upon herself to find the killer. During her investigation, she meets Steven, who makes it plain he has fallen in love with her. But can she trust him? And is he who he says he is?
An enjoyable read with several twists and turns to keep the reader guessing from start to finish.
This was an interesting read, one of the main things that I liked was the way the author described the the life on board cruise ships and also the Caribbean islands that are visited. Some of the character descriptions are great, but others are a bit sketchy, I also found the number of characters a bit confusing, this also meant the plot was quite difficult to follow at times.
Overall I did enjoy the book, and will try other books by the same author.
The mystery itself is a good one: Kayla Sanders, former purser for a Caribbean cruise line, returns to her old ship as a 'celebrity' travel author. In fact, she's not as successful as everyone thinks her to be. And yet the moment is still sweet: the chance to meet with her old friends, play the role of author...and see Patrick MacIntyre, the rogue she broke with years ago after he betrayed her. She never has quite figured out how or why he became such a bastard. And she's appalled to learn how many others he has burned. With his murder, early on, a new amateur sleuth is born--and one that I'll follow eagerly.
Not long ago, top agents would have jumped at the chance to represent the author of this mystery. The series potential is clear from the start. Rapp's love for and mastery of the genre are both clear: Better still, she's not enslaved but knows when it's time for just a splash of the old nasty. And how cool is Rapp as a writer? Cool enough to know how to bring old conventions to life. Consider: Kayla has one quirk that works, though it might have failed abysmally in a lesser writer's hands. On sight, she casts the new people she meets as famous movie stars. But her casting isn't bound by time--but only by style and appearance. So we're treated to a glorious home movie starring greats from the past and the present. The casting's right in character, along with the occasional 'news reels', replaying days' events. As a writer, I'm aware these economical measures keep the story moving. As a reader, I love the fact that they are in character--and save time for those glorious settings.
Well done, Diane Rapp! Traditional publishing's loss is the ebook reader's gain.
