This was a free download of 2 of the short stories contained in the collection 'Judge Dee at Work'. It takes a little while to get used to the style of writing, and the format of the law and justice in ancient China - the Judge's henchmen really enjoy dishing out punishment! Luckily, Judge Dee is there to reason his way to the truth.
'Murder on the Lotus Pond' is very atmospheric. The murderer is totally plausible, and there's a great deal of satisfaction in the revenge of the frogs.
'Murder on New Year's Eve' finds Judge Dee without his three (!) wives and children (visiting his First Lady's mother and not due back till spring), and he has added to his isolation by permitting his aides the night off to join in the celebrations, so he has to rely on his constables to help solve the mystery of a child's missing parents and a pool of blood on the floor. This is a simply-told tale, full of misunderstandings and wrong conclusions at all levels, until Judge Dee's logical brain finds the solution - just in time for the festivities.
Both stories are very good, although there are a couple of annoying misprints. Still highly recommended, but, since I see this is no longer a free download, I'd recommend buying the whole book from which these are taken, rather than paying for these two very short tales.

Murder in Ancient China: Two Judge Dee Mysteries (Chicago Shorts) Kindle Edition
Judge Dee—Confucian Imperial magistrate, inquisitor, and public avenger, based on a famous statesman—was Dutch diplomat and Chinese cultural historian Robert van Gulik’s (1910–67) lasting invention. A welcome addition to the elite canon of fictional detectives, the Judge steps in to investigate homicide, theft, and treason and restores order to the golden age of the Tang Dynasty. In Murder in Ancient China’s first story, we watch as Judge Dee attempts to solve the mystery of an elderly poet murdered by moonlight in his garden pavilion; in the second, set on the eve of the Chinese New Year, the Judge makes two rare mistakes—will peril result?

These two stories are rather quaint and I enjoyed them Some nice descriptions of historical times in China and I liked the woodcut illustrations. The author was an interesting man.

I have enjoyed Judge See mysteries before. These are 2 short stories. I prefer the longer novels as you get a better feel for ancient China and how law and order worked. These don't give you that aspect so it may put you off trying the longer novels but they are worth it.

Robert van Gulik was the Master at story telling from Ancient China. These are so worth reading. The evocative, atmospheric attention to details is compelling.I loved the details re food and clothing which are relevant to the society the Judge moves in.I would highly recommend ALL the Judge Dee stories and my only regret is that I have read them all and, as Mr van Gulik is no longer with us, we cannot look forward to more.

Two short stories about the Chinese Judge Dee, one unusual plot untypical of usual storyline making a welcome departure.. Given less backstory included than usual full length stories helps if you are familial with the historical period as laid out in other Judge Dee novels. Essentially do not stand alone suggest read as part of the series

Judge Dee was a historical figure. Here in two stories the author demonstrates his wisdom and his humanity. The judge solves two murders and restores a poor family to happiness. You either like the period detail and wit of these stories or you don't get it. I get it. Hope you will too.

Excellent in its simplicity. Beautifully conjures up the society of ancient China. Judge Do is a hero to be admired.
