As well as making my own compost I buy a few bags of multi purpose with added John Innes to back up my supply.

It being multi purpose means it can be used throughout your plants life from seed sowing, potting on to planting out. This stuff can be used for propagating, houseplants and pots/containers/hanging baskets too.

John Innes composts are based on loam which gives the body to the mix. Loam also provides clay which is essential for the retention and passing of micro nutrients to your plants. Sphagnum peat moss in John Innes mixes provides water retention and increases the aeration capacity and will break down into humus. Coarse sand or grit is also in there giving better drainage and providing some stability for larger plant root systems. Finally there is some all purpose fertiliser added to the mix containing. . .

Nitrogen - for top growth
Phosphates - for root growth
Potash - for flowering and fruiting
Trace elements- for optimal growth, colour and flavour in edible plants

I've bought this compost many times in the past as I just didn't have time to go out and buy some and could have this delivered and I'm glad I did. This stuff is good. You just know when you delve your hands into it and feel the quality of it that it's going to give you great results. It contains nutrients for 4-6 weeks then you have to supply a plant feed yourself obviously not when using for seedlings or sowing seeds. This compost also contains a moisture holding additive or wetting agent (in the John Innes mix) which does definitely work as I've not had to water my seedlings as much as when I use my own compost.

I do not want to mislead all of those frustrated gardeners who, like myself, have almost given up finding any compost that will do the job.
Three bags of this was delivered today and guess what....it looks like compost and feels like compost, the sort of compost it was possible to buy before we were all told that eco friendly gardening was good.. So we have spent the day potting up young plants and repotting mature ones, purely on the strength of the way the compost feels, looks and smells I have ordered another three bags. Now it is sit back and wait time. I will know within a week whether or not this last chance is any good, if it turns out to be rubbish, I will be getting rid of my pots, and gardening will lose a lot of the pleasure it now holds for me, so fingers crossed. One week later - Exactly the results which I had hoped for,
the young plants are growing and have produced flowering buds, the mature plants are flourishing, I strongly recommend this com[post.

The compost was good value for money and excellent quality, I would recommend this compost to anyone. It is not one of the awful lightweight composts that dries out quickly and then shrinks. It was good for general potting, sowing seeds, baskets and tubs.

To be honest I have very little experience of compost to compare this to but after reading other reviews about poor quality composts this looked good to me! There were no pieces of wood or chunks of other material. So far my potted plant looks very happy and is growing well!

About two weeks after I put some seeds into the compost which I bought through Amazon - I notice dozens small black flys in my house. The seedlings start to die and I find some larva on the roots - they were eating roots. Pots with more larva has less roots. Black flys are everywhere in my house now and I don't know how to get rid of them. I'm so disappointed.
I bought also cheap compost for £3 in the shop and all pots with it are fine - no larva and no flyes.
